Henry VIII, the son of Henry VII, who was the first Tudor monarch, inherited the throne of England in 1509 at the age of twelve. Growing up a devout catholic. He even wrote a book attacking Martian Luther’s ninety five theses eight years after he was crowned king. He then was awarded “defender of the Faith” by Pope Leo X. However after the church denied him permission to divorce his first wife Catherine of Argon because she was becoming old and had only given him one child, a girl named marry. To be able to divorce her and marry 24 year old Anne Boleyn he broke off from the church which began the English Reformation. During the year 1531 Henry forced the clergy to recognize him as the supreme Lord of the English Church. Three years later Parliament passed the Act of Supremacy officially recognizing him as “the supreme head” of the English church. With this power Henry completely took control of England’s religion and politics. In response to the Romanist rebels he destroyed everything they owned including their children and wives. After his death Mary Tudor who was the first daughter of Henry became queen of England. Being catholic England returned to the Roman church. Sadly people were forced by tortured, imprisonment, or even death to change back to the catholic religion. In 1554, marry married Philip II who was also devought to the roman church. They planned on restoring authority to the pope in England. Upon his arrival 300 heretics were executed. Their plan did not work when the English citizens refused to except Phillip as their king and marry remained childless.
