“I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known.” In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald Nick is not a reliable narrator. He prides himself on his honesty, yet he is a very dishonest person. We can see through his actions at parties, and his relationship with Jordan throughout the book that he cannot be trusted. Nick is often under the influence of alcohol when there are big events or parties. Tom takes Nick to the valley of ash. While they are there Tom holds a party with Myrtle and her cousin: “I have been drunk just twice in my life, and the second time was that afternoon” (Fitzgerald 29) The fact that him saying he is drunk shows that we cannot trust what he does for the next few pages or the rest of the chapter. He is most likely saying this is his second time being drunk to make himself seem more reliable. In the third chapter, Nick receives an invitation to Gatsby’s party. Before Nick moved to West Egg he was in a relationship. “I’d been signing letters once a week and signing them: ‘Love, Nick’ (pg 58). When Nick started dating Jordan, he still had feelings deep down for this unknown girl. He is sending her letters every week. Nick is not honest with his feelings towards either Jordan or this girl. He is most likely keeping this girl as a backup if things don't work out with Jordan, but this means he doesn't truly love one of them. Nick and Jordan are in an argument on the phone, then Jordan says, “Well, I met another bad driver, didn’t I” (Fitzgerald 177). Jordan is saying that when she met Nick she thought he was an honest and straightforward person, but she judged him wrong.
