Love is a Liar No emotion hurts more than love. It’s what causes one to long for something he may never have. It’s what makes one regret losing what he used to have. It’s what drives one to make himself vulnerable in the pursuit of his desires. In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald communicates the theme that love is deceitful. One feels this emotion for another for a moment and quickly jumps to the conclusion that they are destined to be together, which often causes problems. Daisy loves Tom and ends up in an unhappy marriage, and she loves Gatsby, which makes her think she can have the relationship she had with him years ago. Additionally, Nick and Jordan love each other and explore a romantic relationship but come to the unfortunate and upsetting conclusion that it won’t work between the two of them. Finally, Gatsby loves Daisy and mistakenly thinks she has always felt the same about him and will choose to be with him. These three examples of love gone wrong …show more content…

Their love causes pain and confusion. There is a lot of haziness around why they cut their relationship off, and Nick is very unsure of his decision to do so. He recounts, “For just a minute I wondered if I wasn’t making a mistake…”. But he does break up with her, which upsets Jordan; no guy has ever dumped her before. She considers herself a “bad driver” when it comes to relationships because she is a habitual liar. She thinks she has finally found a person of honor and integrity to balance her out, but now she thinks she was wrong. “‘Well, I met another bad driver, didn’t I?’” she jabs. “‘I thought you were rather an honest, straightforward person’”. Jordan allows herself to be hopeful about her relationship with Nick, but she ends up getting hurt by him. Nick ends up confused -- after they cut off their relationship, he describes himself as feeling “Angry, and half in love with her, and tremendously sorry”
