In the case of Mr. Gatsby’s downfall, it is in my opinion that even though he was a pretty dishonest and deceiving person his death was not directly his fault. The actions that preceded his death were all caused by Tom Buchanan. The genius in this plot is that even though Gatsby didn't directly cause his death he definitely played a big part in setting it in motion. My first advice to gatsby is to leave other peoples wives alone, its simple if you don't want to get shot don't mess with married women. It held true in this story that if you do as gatsby does one way or another you will receive consequences, even if it's from the wrong person. When you lie as much as gatsby does it is bound to catch up with you at some point. For example Gatsby claims he is an oxford man(Fitzgerald 51), which isn't a flat out lie but what he doesn't say is that he was only there for five days for military work. These kind of claims will catch up to you one way or another, whether they be petty lies or statements that can decide a person's life. Another way that Gatsby caused his own downfall is that he was secretly seeing Daisy while she has a husband(Fitzgerald 96) This act alone will put you in danger no matter what the circumstances, Gatsby knew this going in yet continued to see her. Even though Tom was seeing another woman,(Fitzgerald 23) he still got angry at Gatsby for messing around with his wife. The critical difference between Daisy and Tom's’ affairs is that Daisy once loved Gatsby,(Fitzgerald 133)and Tom doesn't love Myrtle. This difference is a turning point in Gatsby's downfall because he can't justify the affair. I genuinely believe Gatsby would stop at nothing to have daisy.
