Not many people realize the work that goes into the products we use on a day to day basis. It’s not just the technology and the manufacturing, but it’s also the development and research that goes into finding out how to connect with the consumer. Design encompasses a great deal of the world problems we try to solve. These problems range from designing products that simply make life easier to designing products that make life possible. Unfortunately, design doesn’t always successfully create the products the consumer wants or requires. This is due to the communication gap between the creator and the user of a product. He talked about how the key points of his presentation were the importance of communicating with the users of their product because only they know how the product was affecting them. My professor said that immediately after his presentation the Vice President of the company stood up and said to the audience in a short speech “We are the users.” In the book Closing the Communication Gap: An Effective Method for Achieving Desired Results, the author defines this as major miscommunication. “Simply put, miscommunication is like a bad throw in baseball. And like a bad throw can cause a baseball team a run, or even the game, miscommunication can result in honest mistakes that cost money to fix.” The communication gap affects everyone. When we’re unable to create a dialogue about the products we’re using we’re setting ourselves up to fail. A company creating medication for diabetics doesn’t understand the user unless they themselves are a diabetic taking the medication.
