Who really did contribute to Macbeth’s downfall? The play “The Tragedy of Macbeth” is about the main character Macbeth going through great lengths to become King of Scotland but is also hurting himself mentally to where he can’t think on his own and kill people in the process. Macbeth had plenty of influences between the killings and him losing himself during the play that contributed to his downfall. But there is one person that is responsible for his downfall and the reason he died without him really thinking about what he was doing. Which leads his conscience into hallucinating about a dagger telling him to kill Duncan and other influences that led to his decision. Macbeth knew that killing Duncan was treason and that he will get into major trouble with Scotland if anybody finds out. Macbeth’s downfall starts to take a turn because the only person that knew about Macbeth’s prophecies from the witches was Banquo. That’s when Macbeth started to get even more paranoid ; he knew his best friend had heard the prophecies and that in one of the predictions was that the descendants of Banquo will be king of Scotland. His paranoia about Banquo getting the crown leads further on his downfall by planning Banquo’s death along with his son Fleance. He hires murderers and starts feeding them lies that it was Banquo’s fault that everything is going bad in Scotland and that he should pay for what he has caused. It all started when the witches came to Macbeth with predictions of him being king. He was skeptical and brushed it aside thinking that they were not going to come true until the vision came true. After Banquo’s fortune,” Thou shalt get kings,though thou be none.” ( Shakespeare 1.3.67) was told to him by the witches. Macbeth realizes that maybe the visions they had for them were going to come true after all. As soon as things started to go south after the murder of Duncan and Banquo, Macbeth wanted to be sure that he will be safe in the future so he goes to seek out the witches again.The witches tell him three things that made him very confident about his win against Malcolm. The Second Apparition lets him know to “ be bloody, bold, and resolute. Laugh to scorn the power of man, for none of woman born shall harm Macbeth.” (Shakespeare 4.1.79). Knowing that he gets very excited cause he knows that he is going to win because in his mind every man is born from a woman therefore he will not be killed. The Third Apparition tells him that “Macbeth shall never vanquished be until Great Birnam wood to high Dunsinane Hill shall come against me.” (Shakespeare 4.1.92). In his mind, Macbeth thinks there is no way it’s possible that a forest can move and attack his kingdom.
