Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, is a play about a warrior who was prophesied to become king. Once reaching that status, he was consumed by guilt and ambition, causing his downfall. Nowadays, Macbeth is read within classrooms in schools across the world. It is a staple piece of literature. Furthermore, nearing the end of the play, Macbeth fails to keep his power due to the prophecies, his ambition and cockiness, and guilt. The witches had prophesied to Macbeth, and this built his confidence. However, his confidence was soon broken by the end of the play. “The wood of Birnam./ Let every soldier hew him down a bough and bear before him. Thereby shall we shadow/ The numbers of our host and make discovery/ Err in report of us.”(5.4.5-9) Malcolm had gotten all his troops to bring Biram wood to Dunsinane. This directly relates to one of the prophecies said by the witches, where Macbeth would only be able to die once Birnam wood reaches Dunsinane. By them bringing branches of Brinam wood to hide the real number of troops, this causes an evident loophole within the prophecy, thus allowing Macbeth to die. So, the prophecies had an effect on whether Macbeth would succeed. The prophecies made Macbeth paranoid, which caused him to kill Banquo, it gave him false confidence and has loopholes within them that ultimately led to his downfall. Secondly, Macbeth was ambitious and cocky. This made him not care about others, lose his morals, and think he could not die. By the end of the play, Macbeth had completely lost his morals.
