Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809. Poe was a brilliant writer known for his short stories. Some of his literary classics include, “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Raven,” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” ”Poe’s Life”. Poe was a mysterious man himself, but nothing left his fans more puzzled than his death on October 7, 1849. Although no one was able to identify the true reason for his death many blame it on a life threatening illness, various poisons, or even murder. After researching, my sources indicate that alcohol is the logical cause of Poe’s death. Poe struggled with alcohol throughout his life. It was said that a glass of wine would leave him stumbling. Once, Poe fell ill and after making a miraculous recovery his physician said that a relapse could be fatal. Many believed that this illness was brought on by a night of drinking. Knowing the temptation he could resist in alcohol the last months of his life [Poe became a member of the Temperance Movement.
