Whole Foods Market Inc. is an American food retail chain that specializes in organic food. It was founded By John Mackey in 1980 in Austin, Texas by a merger with Clarksville Natural Grocery. The company currently operates 431 supermarkets with 91,000 employees. Based on its 2014 revenue Whole Foods is the largest natural-foods grocer in the United States and the 30th largest retailer in the U.S. It generated more than $14 billion in revenues, most of which was from perishable goods. It operates within the United States and Canada and also the United Kingdom since 2004, when it acquired Fresh & Wild stores (Whole Foods Market, 2015). Whole Foods Market only sells products that meet its quality standards for being "natural", (products are listed on their online "Unacceptable Food Ingredients" list). Apart from the success in the food retail business the company focuses on many other activities that are defined by its motto: Whole Foods, Whole People, and Whole Planet. Innovation management analysis
In this section we look at innovation performance at Whole Foods within different areas. Before proceeding to the analysis, it is necessary to realize that the particular ways the innovation is managed within an organization are a variable of multiple determining factors, such as: size of the company, sector the company operates in, its networks, competitors etc. (Crossan and Apaydin, 2009). Some of this information can be found within a previous section. In addition, in order to provide better context for innovation audit SWOT analysis was conducted (see appendix 1).
