George was not a stranger to Lennie, he was actually his best friend. Both traveled together and George was sort of Lennie’s keeper. George was asked this by slim and he answered “Sure, We kinda look after each other” George said (Steinbeck 34). This means that when George killed Lennie it was in passion and out of sympathy for Lennie.
The book Of Mice And Men also known as OMAM starts off with 2 men George and Lennie being dropped off a Few miles South of Soledad California, Soledad actually translates to loneliness. George was a short fellow but also was a smart man. He took care of his cousin Lennie because Lennie had autism. Lennie was a tall,strong and really hard working fella but he could kill small animals with his bare hands. The two went to a ranch looking for work since Lennie had got in trouble in a town called Weed.
The agreement is yes George should have killed Lennie in Of Mice and Men, the reasons are that Curley would have killed him anyway and that they didn’t have enough money for a trail. George should not have killed Lennie because Curley would have killed him anyway. You know this because of this quote “ I’m gonna get him. I’m going for my shotgun. I’ll kill that big son-of-a-bitch myself.
There is yet another reason why George had to take Lennie’s life. George knew that the society did not treat persons who were mentally disabled with care or respect. No one would fully understand the mind of a child in someone like Lenny. There was a time when George stated. “I used to have a hell of a lot of fun with ‘im. Use to play jokes on ‘im cause he was too dumb to even know he had a joke played on him.
There are many reasons why George had to kill Lennie, many of the actions Lennie made contributed to the painful decision George had to make in the end. George knows just how easy his life could be without Lennie, since Lennie is constantly making mistakes and can't tell right from wrong. Often George and Lennie find themselves running from lynch mobs, or looking for new work because due to lennie's actions. Lennie has all intent of being good, but he has the mind of a child what is often getting Them in trouble. Having the mind of a child makes George a role model for lennie, but George finds it hard to control lennie.
Lennie with his simple mind, always gets into trouble. This time, Lennie gets himself in a bind once again, that George can’t save him from. George decision to kill Lennie in the story, was due to his responsibility, sympathy, and love for Lennie. George’s decision to kill Lennie was out of sympathy for him.
2. George knows that it would only be right for him to be the one to take Lennie's life. One could justify that George has been taking care of Lennie for a very long time and he wishes to be the one who took care of him up until the end. 3. Furthermore, after George killed Lennie, his co-workers commented,”Now what the hell ya suppose is eatin’ them two guys?”(Steinbeck 107). George was not celebrating the death of his best friend, he was mourning since Lennie was no longer with him. George’s co-workers do not necessarily understand what he is going through since they have never truly been close with somebody. George wanted the best for Lennie, he would not have killed Lennie out of amusement and been upset about it, he only wanted for him to die
In the end of Of Mice and Men, George shoots Lennie to save Lennie from torture from Curley. “George raised the gun and his hand shook, and he dropped his hand to the ground again. ”(Steinbeck, 52) This proves George didn’t want to shoot Lennie, but George had to. It was the only way for Lennie to be safe from future hurting and suffering.
In this story Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, I do believe that George was right to kill Lennie. Some people will say that it was wrong for George to kill Lennie But to be honest with you—there was no escape, and I say this because a little bit after George hears “a man’s voice call up from the river, and another man answer”(100). So knowing that George heard voices from up the river probably means that Curley and his men where near by. I also strongly believe that if George didn’t kill Lennie, the others would’ve done much worse things to him. I like to think of it as a question.
George killing Lennie is “Mercy Killing”. George had to kill Lennie or else he would have killed more people without even thinking. George did not want to do this and did it as peacefully as possible but he felt he had to do this action. Although George loved Lennie, it was hard for him to keep taking care of him. When they went to new farms to work George would have to keep his eye on Lennie at all times and he was scared to leave him alone while he went in town because he did not know what he would do and if Lennie would them both fired or even killed.
In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck many hard decisions were made. In this novel two Characters George and Lennie get kicked out of their last city and travel to soledad to start their new life. Lennie causes lots of commotion at the ranch which turns people against George and Lennie. At the end of the novel George kills Lennie which raises the question if he fairly weighed all of the options and if his choice was justified or condemned. One reason why this was a justified decision is that George only wanted the best for his best friend.
That George got rid of the burden that Lennie was to him. On the other hand, George also knows what Lennie is capable of and knows what Lennie has done in the past. For example, the thing that happened in weed, “So he reaches out to feel this red dress an’ the girl lets out a squawk, and that gets Lennie all mixed up, and he holds on ‘cause that’s the only thing he can think to do” (Steinbeck 41). Lennie panics too much and just freaks people out, so George put Lennie out of his confusion. In the end, George murdering his friend was well justified.
In the novella, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, George’s decision to kill Lennie at the end of the novel was justified. George and Lennie were best friends, and have been since they were little. They got ran out of Weed(the old farm they used to work at) for harassing a girl and not letting her go. He was just scared from her screaming and kicking. He didn’t mean to harm, or scare her.
So, in the end of the book, George decides to kill Lenny to put in him out his misery. George made the correct decision to kill Lennie because he took away his suffering and pain from making too many mistakes. Lennie was suffering because he was in trouble so many times and he did not realize what he was doing wrong. In the story George says “ Ever’body gonna be nice to you. Ain’t gonna be no more trouble.
