A high school sophomore named Collin Palmer composed a letter disagreeing with Deb- orah King’s predominant argument that we shouldn’t go overboard with celebrity obsession. He claims that “...it’s only human nature” (1). I agree with Palmer on several of his notions. How- ever, celebrity obsession has gotten out of hand and impacts us negatively. People mirror the ac- tions of celebrities with bad reputations.
It was clear that from the very beginning of Jackson’s career that he was one of his favorite artists. Brown engaged in the Rock ‘n’ Roll style of music, and Jackson idolized him as his godfather even though he did not fully get to match Brown’s level of the style. Jackson was more popular in pop music but in later years, it was not hard to see elements of Brown style in some of Jackson’s rock music such as You Rock My World and Give in to Me where the vocal techniques and performances could indeed be traced to those of Brown. Brown was also credited with providing a new direction for R & B that would later evolve into soul in the 1960s (Soul: a Historical Reconstruction of Continuity and Change in Black Popular Music, 33). The style applied vocal and instrumental elements.
had the unique skill to merge genre’s together and form something that was entirely different and new for the generation, and which led to other generations to merge other genres. Presley’s inspiration of genres was greatly impacted by the African American culture; however, brought his country-side to his music, which is what gave his music his own creative sound. He was the first artist to basically merge black and white music together, and widening his fan base. Elvis Presley not only changed the way entertainers performed, he also changed the way it was marketed. Teenage fans were soon to be seen as important consumers of goods, who bought products like records, tickets to concerts, and movies.
One way Elvis Presley propelled himself into superstardom was his mix of blues, R&B, country, and rockabilly. Although some adults of the generation found this music to be too dangerous for the mainstream, many teenages of the day found this new music to be very exciting and electrifying. In a way this made Elvis even more popular in the eyes of his now large and constantly growing
Michael Jackson not only shocked the world with his stellar moves and his amazing voice, but also with his scandalous life experiences. His fame and fortune was getting to him. But even with his struggle, there was still immense success. Michael Jackson couldn’t just sing with the voice of an angel, but he could also dance like no one had ever seen before.
Even though Michael had a solo career and he became a hit in 1972 he still was in his family band. His father pushed him and his brothers, so hard that if they didn 't do well there father would start to get violent. Despite this, Jackson 's father had faith that they would become a hit. Thanks to his father, Jackson was so big that he started to be called “the King of Pop”.
On May 16th, 1983, Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever was aired on national television and displayed Michael Jacksons live performance of Billie Jean at the Pasadena Civic Centre. In his autobiography, Moonwalk, Jackson writes: “There never was a real Billie Jean. ” Michael also tries to convey the messages that trust is crucial, and that you should always be aware of peoples intentions through out your life. Through letting the driving beat and distinctive bassline that Billie Jean contained, Michael pulled off a move that not even his own brothers knew he had . This performance was the very first time that Michael Jackson performed his signature “moonwalk” that would be an iconic image for Michael’s legacy. As a result of his energy and

Elvis Presley has had more impact on American society and culture than any other person in history for the three following reasons; his large contribution to the start of the generation gap in the 1950’s, his huge impact on rock ‘n’ roll music, and finally, his music opened a door for some integration between races. First of all, in the 1950’s Elvis Presley and his music started the era of the generation gap between teenagers and their parents, an era which is still going on today. With Elvis being very young, attractive and his new type of music and dancing, teenage girls fell head over heels for the young star. Most parents though, did not feel the same way about Presley. He was often described a vulgar and many accused him of corrupting the youth.
To sum it all up, indeed, while celebrities could behave as an inspiration to many, they do not behave as good idols. But, to conclude by the actions of some celebrities that all of them should be generalized into two extremes: good and bad, would be irrational. Each big name is a special individual with his or her very own attributes, and last judgment on their behavior and their faithfulness towards their fans must be founded on an individual lifestyle, having a greater emphasis compared to how their image portrayed by the media. It is imperative that the way these celebrities are distinguished should be on the basis of their actions on stage as, it is these actions that are having a larger influence on the public. Hence, only after contemplation and delicate weighing of a celebrity’s deeds, both in and off the spotlight, can we make a conclusion whether the particular celebrity is a good or a bad influence.
Celebrities with positive influence are not given the opportunity to spread their positive message to the world because the spotlight is mostly given to those who have no dreams and goals in life.
