Why was softball invented and how did it become so popular? Softball is a well-known sport that has become very popular all over the world. Softball was created in Chicago, Illinois in 1887 by a man named George Hancock. He founded softball on Thanksgiving Day in 1887. He and some friends had gathered together at their university´s gym to listen to a football game. After the victory of their team, one of Hancock´s friends picked up a stray boxing glove and threw it at someone. George who was known as the inventor of softball tied the boxing glove so that it resembled a ball. He chalked out the diamond and broke off a broom handle to use as a bat. The gym that they was much smaller and the dimensions were very different from a regular baseball field. Thus, a new version of baseball was born...Softball. Hancock was impressed with what he had come up with. He developed a large ball and a small bat for the sport. Rules and regulations for the sport of softball were established in 1889.
