The Stoics believed if they let their emotions control them, then they were not able to live a rational and self-determined life. They would fall victim to their emotions and their judgement would have became clouded. Also, the Stoics would only attach their happiness to things they could control. If they did not, it would put external events in control of their happiness, such as wealth, fame, or love. They believed they could only control their own attitude toward life, everything else was God’s will. One major benefit to feeling this way is that a person would not spend their life fighting against the uncontrollable.
