The decades surrounding the 1950’s were marked as the Golden Age of baseball, with New York as the world’s Major League capital. With three teams all competing for the title of world champions, New York was alive with hometown spirit. Between the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Yankees, and New York Giants, the city brought home the world title seven consecutive years. Baseball was the heart of America and earned the nickname of America’s pastime. Every man, woman, and child knew the big name players of these three teams.
Political campaigns and elections in the United States changed dramatically between 1815 and 1840 due to large social and political changes, such as universal white male suffrage which caused caused more voters in the middle and lower classes, and the growth of the common man ideal which resulted in politicians that were voted into office based on their background rather than their actual political views and knowledge. The political changes that granted universal white male suffrage caused an increase in eligible voters (doc 1). This increase in eligible voters (mainly the middle class) led to a demand for politicians who were more inclined to push for legislation that would benefit the “common man”, this included topics such as child labor

In 1964 there were likely conservatives and moderates who were turned off by Goldwater’s campaign and rhetoric, or persuaded by Lyndon Johnson’s campaign and his status as Kennedy’s successor. 1968 is likely an outlier due to George Wallace’s campaign, which while it might have been closer ideologically to some non-southern conservative voters then Nixon’s campaign, his predicted share based on ideology was weighed down by his lack of a campaign outside of the South and by distaste for his open racism. As I read our textbook, I drew parallels between the 2016 and 1980 Presidential elections. Carter suffered an embarrassing loss with only forty-nine electoral votes compared to Reagan's 489. Likewise, Hillary Clinton suffered a similar embarrassing loss with 232 electoral votes compared the Donald Trump's 306 electoral votes. President Carter instituted a policy of extreme detente, denouncing America's "inordinate fear of communism" (Gingrich Haley 2016, 166). This redirection of policy was in stark contrast policy makers highlighting the criminal nature of Communism.
When Obama was elected President of the United States, it was a historic day in this country. As the first African-American president, Obama was breaking boundaries. During this time, there were many ads being broadcasted. Some that will attack the opponent, and some that are just purely to show a more personal side to the candidates. One ad that I saw that stuck out to me was the 2008 ad featuring Barack Obama.
I think the clip about Ronald Reagan is the most effective. It showcases what Reagan has achieved as President. Rather than making promises about what he will do or attacking the other candidate the ad simply talks about how the country has improved with him leading it. No, none of the ads really crossed any lines so to speak but the “Daisy” one did come pretty close by basically saying if you voted for Goldwater then the world will die in nuclear fire, however it was a different time. As for negative ads, they can, if not executed correctly cause a backlash that can hurt the other candidate.
What is conservatism? Well, conservatism is a standard value and idea with resistance to change. Conservatism was mentioned a lot in the 1980's. One of our many president's elections implied the return of conservatism. The known Conservative was the United States 40th President Ronald Reagan.
The presidential campaigns of GOP candidates Mike Huckabee¬—former Governor of Arkansas—and Marco Rubio—Senator from Florida—differ starkly in many respects. The two enjoy different bases of support, differ on many of the issues and employ radically different rhetorical styles and debate tactics. However, in terms of the campaigns’ media strategy, the most interesting difference lies in the candidates’ propensity (or lack thereof) to attack their fellow GOP candidates publically. Analyzing Rubio and Huckabee’s penchant to publically denounce other GOP candidates via social media will likely reveal the differences between the two campaigns’ online communication strategies. The differing strategies could be reflective of the candidates’ position in the polls; in so far that a leading candidate may have a higher incentive to attack other candidates, while lower polling candidates may have an incentive to behave in a more restrained manner.
