The Freedom Ride of 1965 was organised by Charles Perkins, who was one of only two Aboriginal students at Sydney University, after he observed the way that Aboriginal people were treated. He was an Aboriginal man from Northern Territory who had experienced racial discrimination throughout his childhood, having been sent away from his parents at a young age. It is predicted that Charles Perkins was motivated to organise the Freedom Ride and demonstrations around New South Wales after observing the way Aboriginal people were treated. Charles Perkins, born in Alice Springs 1936, was a controversial leader within the Aboriginal community. Perkins was known both for this willingness to fight for what he believed in, and his determination, although this confidence brought him into conflict with community leaders and the government. Perkins was involved in the ‘Freedom Ride’ travelling through rural New South Wales in the early 60’s. This ride was a significant contribution highlighting the predicament the Aboriginals faced. Being Aboriginal himself, this ride demonstrated that Aboriginal people could stand up for themselves.

Charles Perkins is an Aboriginal activist who was involved in the Freedom Rides while he was a third year arts student at the University of Sydney and the president of SAFA, Student Action for Aborigines. Through his role leading the Freedom Rides, he helped to desegregate public facilities in country towns, improved housing conditions and made White Australia in city areas aware of the discrimination and racism present in country towns. Charles Perkins played a major role in the Freedom Ride in order to shape Australian society from the 1960’s onwards. His key role in the Freedom Ride allowed him to successfully advocate for the desegregation of Australian institutions and towns as well as to reduce the amount of discrimination against Indigenous Australians. He endeavoured to make a change in Australian society, and wanted to expose the true nature of discrimination and segregation against Indigenous Australians. He wanted to gain the rights and freedom for his people, and effectively achieved those goals. Therefore, Charles Perkins did play a major role in the Freedom Ride from the 1960’s onwards, resulting in the improvement of Australian society.

He pushed himself out into a world full of racism, to raise awareness of the issues Indigenous people are facing in education, housing, health and their employment. This article discusses the speech given by an Indigenous journalist, Stan Grant who participated in a debate where he spoke for the motion “Racism is destroying the Australian Dream’’. Hence, the main points of this article are mostly evidence given by Grant in his debate to support his idea that the Australian Dream is indeed rooted in racism. One of the main points is that the indigenous Australians are often excluded and disregarded as non-Australians simply due to their race and skin colour. Celebrating Australia day is like holding a party without inviting the hosts. While many Australians celebrate this holiday, they have little knowledge behind the events that occurred and why it is celebrated. The event that I have chosen is the Freedom Rides, which started May 4, 1961 and ended December 10, 1961. The Freedom Rides were inspired by the Greensboro Sit-ins, and started with 13 African American and Caucasian protestors riding buses into the segregated south to challenge the lack of enforcement to the Supreme Court ruling that segregated buses were unconstitutional. While the activists were peaceful the local law enforcement and people against their message were not. The activists were beaten at several stops along their journey from Anniston to Birmingham with chains, bricks, and bats by Ku Klux Klan (KKK) members in Alabama, and activists that were injured would be refused hospital treatment. The Freedom Rides was a series of bus rides to the Deep South to protest against segregation laws. They believed that they should test the Supreme Court ruling of Boynton v. Virginia and Irene Morgan v. Commonwealth of Virginia. These declared segregation in interstate bus and rail stations unconstitutional. The South ignored these laws, and the federal government did nothing to stop them.
