During the years of 1861-1865, about 620,000 people had lost their lives due to overall disagreements between the North and the South revolving around the subject of slavery. Thereby having an effect on the people of the country. The North and the South had differences among each other that relate to why the majority of one economy favored slavery and why the other economy did not. Therefore, the North and the South’s perspective of slavery had caused certain events to lead up to the civil war. The North was against slavery in the South causing tension between these two economies. “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” by Harriet Beecher Stowe was a source that helped the North learn about how slaves were being treated in which enforce why the North did not agree with slavery in the South. As an attempt to ban slavery in any territory in Mexico the Wilmot Proviso was created however it did not pass under the Senate. The Wilmot proviso lead up to the Compromise of 1850 in which benefited the South in most ways. However, the Compromise of 1850 did not …show more content…

The South had the right to own slaves because there were no federal laws against it by which reflected states rights yet most Northerners refused to enforce some fugitive laws. For instance, Northerners did not support or agree with having to return any Southern escaped slave and going to jail along with having to pay a $1,000 fine if helped a runaway slave. As a result of the North not enforcing fugitive laws this angered the South causing even more tension. Thus, the tension between the South and the North would eventually lead up to the Southern secession which was the withdrawal from the country since many Southerners believed that the federal government was trying to take states rights due to also believing that the government would abolish slavery.
