How its all began.
In the late XIX Vietnam was a Colony of the France. During the World War 2 Japan invaded the Indochina ( Vietnam ), after that the French colonial authorities. In the 1944 Japan by force of arms has established full control over the French possessions ( that was made because of the weakness of the Japan on the Pacific Ocean). On September 1945 Japan surrendered. During August when the Japanese forces remained inactive and Viet Minh and other nationalist groups started to occupy public buildings and took the weapons. This actions leaded to the August Revolution. On September 2 1945 the the officer Ho Chi Minh declared independent Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
However, France refused to recognize the loss of its colony and moved the expeditionary force to Indochina. France and Vietnam had a negotiation with each others and used that time to build their military forces, then France started colonial war in Vietnam. In 1950 U.S. started to help France in that war.
In 1954 the situation in this war was not so good for France. By this time U.S. payed 80% of that war. The Geneva Agreements were concluded to stop the war in July 1954.

The North part was controlled by DRV and South part remained under the authority of the French-appointed local administration. In 1955 Ngo Dinh Diem pushed Emperor Bao aside and become a president of the Government of the Republic Vietnam or just South Vietnam. U.S. in 1955 started to support South Vietnam with war against Viet Cong, because at that period of time U.S. had their own interests in that war because they had a Cold War against U.S.S.R. They started to train South Vietnamese armies to help them with the war against Viet Cong (or Vietnamese Communist). CIA also helped them.
