In today’s society the American culture has been expanded and taken further than ever imagined. Today you see many American customs in countries all over the world. Many countries find this expansion and growth of the American culture to not follow the strict religious rules or beliefs and block their citizens from viewing or seeing our culture. Although there many countries who do embrace the American culture within their boundaries are more successful in technology advances, as well as they are more resourceful. Many cultures have adopted American ways, resulting in the American culture popping up all over the world. Like this and many other countries cell phones are attached to people at the ear and glued to their hands. Kwame Appiah from Ghana wrote in the New York Times wrote, “But before the King arrived, people were taking calls on cellphones…”(Appiah, pg 864). Before a ceremony for the King, the people of Ghana are still using the American adopted culture of cell phones. This is a necessity in many countries, as they are business oriented and use cell phones as the major way of communication. Although this technological breakthrough with American culture, some cultures did not appreciate this breakthrough. Heather Havrilesky interviewed many Middle Eastern people for her documentary “Hollywood in the Muslim World”, in the documentary interviewing many people they say many negative comments about the expansion of American culture like “such “cultural pollution” is a threat to Muslim identity”(Havrilesky, pg 860). America was based off of the hard work of the immigrants and business people today. This is the culture that America is known for. So as the American culture expands to other countries, this is what America is known for and this is what other societies adapted. Thomas Friedman explains in his book, “The Lexus and the Olive Tree” of the five gas stations of the world. Each corner of the world so to speak has a gas station and they each act and sell gas differently. America’s gas stations is one of the cheapest. He says in his book “Gas costs only $1 a gallon, but you pump it yourself… The American gas station, by contrast, is much more efficient”(Friedman, pg 855 & 857). So the American way of pump your own gas compared to some of the others was shown to be more efficient, the American way is the best way. As well there is an American term “Smart Power” that America can adapted and many other countries have as well. Smart Power is a combination of getting what you want through attraction vs coercion or payment.
