Why Do We Eradicate Child Abuse

Child abuse--arguably one of the most overlooked and unethical social issues present in our society--is still very common. Superfluous, even. The question is, why? Child abuse has been present for centuries and yet it still lingers. What property keeps it alive? We need to know in order to stop it. The persisting issue of child abuse needs to come to an end. Child abuse is defined as the physical, mental, sexual, or emotional harm of children on a regular basis underneath a parent/guardian’s supervision. In the United States of America alone, more than three million cases of child abuse are reported every single year; with child neglect and physical abuse being the most common forms. Child neglect is defined as continuously failing to provide for a child and their needs, while physical abuse is the physical harm of a child in actions such as punching. If you have spotted enough of the aforementioned signs in someone to convince you that they are being abused, you do not necessarily have to talk to them specifically--or even anyone that would be awkward speaking to. You could simply call 911, contact a teacher (all teachers are generally well-versed in the identification of child abuse as part of their training), or contact several organizations such as the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, Children at Risk, or the Child Abuse Prevention Association. However, a suspected of abuse is easier to confirm if you are friends with the person you believe is suffering from child abuse. They are still unlikely to specifically tell you about it; but the signs will become more obvious and more potent. Being there for the person going through a tough time is probably one of, if not, the best thing you can do to assist them.
