Amos Fortune, Free Man is a biography written by Elizabeth Yates and illustrated by Nora Unwin. Amos was an African prince who was captured and sold into slavery in Boston, Massachusetts to Caleb Copeland. He developed a good friendship with the Copeland family, especially Caleb’s daughter Roxanna. Unfortunately, his owner, Mister Copeland, passed away and Amos had to be sold at auction. He was sold to Ichabod Richardson.

In the novella Anthem no one knows about freedom of men. Equality 7-2521 learns that every man has freedom, but his brothers don’t know it. Thanks to this, he was able to look at slaveholders’ papers and get a better understanding of what was going on and he started to realize that what was going on was wrong. This realization helped him be mentally free for a time and he even attempted to escape, but another slave ratted him out. He went to Covey, and after a while of being with there, they got into a fight that “rekindled the few expiring embers of freedom, and revived within [him] a sense of [his] own manhood. It recalled the departed self-confidence, and inspired [him] again with a determination to be free’ (82-83). Liberty Or Death It can be hard wanting to make a change within a whole country, and to lead a revolution can be a difficult task. During the revolutionary times Americans wanted their freedom from Great Britain, but most people of those days were uneducated and possibly full of fear for change, but all they needed somebody to influence them and show a little emotion towards them it would be more relatable to them. I used Patrick Henry’s “Speech to the Virginia Convention” the persuasive technique used is pathos, many people were angry when Henry told them the truth of what will happen if they trust the British, and readied them for a war they will have to fight.

By examining parallels between slavery and the carceral state, Davis contends that the two systems mutually characterize black people as disposable and compels them to incapacitation. Focusing on the two oppressive systems’ reliance on the maintenance of ignorance, Davis discusses how this ignorance is connected to America’s dominant sentiments of capitalism and self-interest, which, altogether, perpetuate cycles of abuse that disproportionately harm communities of color and lower-class peoples. As a result, this propels the creation of social hierarchies which, because it inherently cultivates inequalities, causes America’s classification as a “democracy” to be impossible.
