Once Wes was handcuffed, he immediately regrets his actions. Wes take responsibility for his action and has no intention of ever having his freedom or fate be determined by someone other than himself. Hubner’s intentions with this study and Last Chance in Texas is to allow others that read the book to recognize the meaning behind a juvenile’s criminal actions. This could be a guide book for a potential probation officer to understand unique ways for them to treat their offender with the motive to not focus on punishment. The potential probation officer and use the ideas of the criminal finding a way to put himself in the victim’s shoes and understand how being a criminal harms more than just the person that was intended to be hurt. The audience of this book varies. The book was poorly written without as much detail, so the stories written down could not have a false accusation that the stories documented from the students in this book
Legend says that Captain William Kidd was one of the most ruthless pirates of his time. Even today, people tell tales of this man and search for his buried treasure. However, William Kidd was not a pirate, nor particularly ruthless, but simply a privateer sailing for the British crown. Privateering could be considered a lawful form of piracy; privateers were given permission from the crown to seize enemy ships, whereas pirates pillaged illegally and as they pleased. Captain Kidd was a respectable mariner commissioned by the King to hunt pirates in the Indian Ocean, however, his investors got angry when he did not show any profits.
Cole is a 15-year old that trusts no one and no one trusts him. He feels like everyone needs to fear him because he thinks that everyone is out to get him. He thinks everyone in his town is against anything he does. He has gone to juvie many times and is just trying to get out of going to real jail. His dad beats him and his mom does not care about him she just cares about her reputation as a wealthy woman.
Cole was beaten by him throughout his childhood. This pain and anger gave him the personality and characteristic to inflict pain on other people. The two final themes have a very strong connection. In order to heal, mentally and physically, you have to learn to forgive and receive forgiveness. This was a lesson the reader and the main character, Cole, experience throughout the book.
That’s what’s important’”(285). This shows the trust and close bong that has grown in their relationship. One of the steps to overcoming adversity is fixing a broken bond and Cole did that which had a big impact on him overcoming his adversity. At the beginning of the novel, Cole Matthews is a vicious teenager who thinks he is superior to everyone, but is, in fact, hiding behind a shield of anger, the result of being brutally abused by his drunken father. Cole’s father, Mr. Matthews, drinks non stop until he becomes a monster, and then ruthlessly beats Cole up. When talking to Garvey, a proud, Tlingit indian, who is also his parole officer, Cole opens up about his father’s abuse saying, “‘You don’t know what it’s like being hit over and over until you’re so numb you don’t feel anything!” (Mikaelsen 28).
It was Garvey who convinced her to press charges against Cole's father and testify against him. I believe that Cole and his mother would be able to build a new life together. I think this because after Cole was mulled Ms. Matthews told Cole what she realized. She says: “I couldn't change your father but I could change me.”
Juvenile crimes are essentially crimes committed by adolescents. Some examples of juvenile crimes include homicides, robberies, and drug use. While these crimes are basically the same crimes that adults commit, the difference is that they are committed by adolescents and the motivation behind these crimes. The motives for which a crime may have been committed are stronger in adolescents such as stress, jealousy, impulse, or simply an attempt to seek attention. These things are important factors in differentiation between juvenile and adult crimes.
Everything will turn out right in the end, and Cole exhibits this. The whole reason that Cole ended up o the island in the first place is because he made bad choices. These choices led to more bad choices and then Cole had a traumatic experience. This changes Cole’s life forever.
When Cole Matthews was given banishment, he had many opportunities to reflect on his numerous crimes, and his behavior. As the chapters are progressed it is clear that Cole does not treat banishment for its actual reason. Banishment was for Cole to realize his actions and how he could make up for them. Cole wanted to take banishment as a subsitide for jail, because he didn’t want to be incarcerated. Cole’s constant negative attitude, discouraging behavior, and actions got the best out of him.
The song I choose to analyze as poetry is J. Cole’s song “Hold It Down”. This song is from his mixtape The Warm Up, which is my favorite mixtape by him. This song is produced and written by J. Cole whose real name is Jermaine Lamarr Cole. He produces his own songs and writes them himself, which is one of the reasons why he is my favorite rapper. Whenever I am having a bad day, I always find myself listening to this song.
Cole emphasizes in his lyrics that “life can’t be no fairytale, no once upon a time; but [he’ll] be God damned if a n***a don’t be tryin’”. Despite all the shortcomings of his city, that won’t stop Cole from trying to make something out of himself. In comparison, I always had to learn things the hard way, and I always failed at what I tried to achieve. However my mistakes never stopped from moving forward and I continue to overcome any obstacles that stand in my way.
