South Africa is a country, which holds different practices to many other countries as a result of our social and political past. One such practice is the employment of domestic workers. Such a service is not largely and affordably available in many other countries around the world. This is because this service of domestic workers is a result of the apartheid years, where blacks, and other non-whites were regarded and treated as inferior. In order to make a living, blacks would thus work for the ‘superior’ whites in their homes, cleaning and cooking. However, because of the laws implemented, which caused blacks to be treated as inferior, the homeowners would not treat the domestic workers correctly. It is only the very wealthy families who can afford domestic workers around the world, while in South Africa nearly every family has the service of a domestic worker. However it seems that the terrible treatment and working conditions, since the years of apartheid have extended to today. Such treatment includes using separate utensils and dishes, which remain outdoors; this is because the mentality of most homeowners from the apartheid days towards their non-white domestic working has not changed. Many homeowners still see their domestic workers has inferior, and treat them as such, Other terrible treatments include having to complete tasks which is not part of his or her job, working long hours for wages below minimum wage and having to reside in areas such as a store room without ablution
