Introduction My name is Lexie Barrette-Cole, I’m a senior nursing student at North Dakota State University in Bismarck, North Dakota. I’m applying to the Nurse Residency program at University of Wisconsin Madison for the Inpatient Oncology unit in Winter 2024. I will be graduating from my nursing program in December of 2023 and would love to start off my career as a nurse at UW Madison. I have been working on the oncology unit at Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck as a Certified Nursing Assistant for a year. In my time there, I have realized my passion for caring for patients and their families in their time of need.

First and foremost, I have learned the importance of patience in nursing. Not everything will go perfectly when caring for a patient and those patients are going through difficult physical and emotional experiences. Having patience allows for the provision of compassionate and understanding care, even in challenges situations. In addition, I have also learned the importance of empathy in nursing. Being able to understand and share in the feelings of patients allows nurses to provide more individualized care and connect with patients on a deeper level. It helps us build rapport and trust by showing them that their experiences and emotions are understood and valued. Furthermore, another crucial skill I have acquired during nursing school is using evidence-based practice. This allows nurses to use the best available research evidence, clinical expertise, and patient values and preferences in making clinical decisions. Practices are constantly changing as more evidence and research comes out, it is important that we as nurses keep up-to-date with the new evidence and research so that we can improve patient outcomes and quality of …show more content…

As a nurse at UW Health, I can contribute to diversity and inclusion by ensuring that I educate myself about the different diverse needs and experiences of patients from different backgrounds. This includes learning about cultural, racial, and socioeconomic factors that can affect healthcare outcomes for each patient. By doing so, I will be able to provide more personalized and effective care. Furthermore, I will advocate for each patient so that they can feel comfortable and heard while receiving care. I will also take responsibility of my own biases and prejudices that may arise. I will be open to feedback and practice self-reflection so that I can address any unconscious biases that may influence patient care. I plan to care for each patient based on their individualized needs regardless of their background or situation so that they can receive thorough and appropriate
