In current day North Korea controls its populations media almost as much as the government in Oceania does. North Korean people have no access to the internet and media is amongst the most controlled in the world. In 1984 there is a whole branch of the government devoted to it media. "The Ministry of Truth, concerned itself with news, entertainment, education, and the fine arts" (Orwell, 4). It is much like Korea in this manner. The United States government is beginning to watch its streets and population with cameras much like Oceania does with its telescreens.There are cameras going up around the country that everyone has access to. Our phones can also be taped by the government and are already monitored by the phone providers. In 1984 the Ministry of Peace does the very same thing. According to Winston, "the Ministry of Love maintains law and order" (Orwell, 4). Like our cameras the Ministry of Love uses their telescreens to, "receive and transmit information simultaneously. Anything above a low whisper could be heard and as long as you stay in the screens field of vision you could be seen" (Orwell, 3). The novel "1984" by George Orwell has much relevance in our society today due to its link to the 1940s, reminder of a society without freedom, and the relation to how the United States controls its citizens through information control.
