Generals Robert E. Lee and George B. McClellan were the major commanders in the spotlight of the combat. These two men were completely different and the battle effected them in a weird way. While McClellan officially won the the battle and Lee lost it, his lack actions before, during and after the battle caused him his job and a Chief Commander, as opposed to Lee who´d always been respected gained even more respect by his campaign in Maryland and battle tactics at Sharpsburg. Despite removing McClellan from his position, President Lincoln achieved something that altered the course of American History once and for all, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The bloody battle of Antietam, was one of the most significant and most peculiar battles fought in the history of the USA; not only were the battle plans revealed before the battle even started, but the question is whether the Union took a full advantage of the leaked out document, evidence of which is not really straightforward in the course of the battle itself.

It all started when the Confederate Supreme Commander Robert E. Lee launched an assault that brought his army of Northern Virginia into Pennsylvania (Kagan and Hyslop 140). It is because of this movement of troops that the war shifted from Virginia to Pennsylvania after the Union Army followed them and left Pennsylvania. Lee proved that the Confederate army is capable of winning the war by making a bold move. This changed the Union strategy from defensive to offensive and trying to end the war quickly. On June 9th forces from Jeb Stuart's Cavalry division defeated opposition at Brandy Station and is able to guard the main Confederate army from raids as they marched to Pennsylvania (Kagan and Hyslop 140).
The battle began with Confederate General Johnston initiating a surprise attack on General Grant’s base around the Shiloh Church. During the battle, Johnston was shot in the leg and bled to death, leaving General Pierre Gustave Beauregard in charge of the Confederates. This was the Appomattox Campaign, which led the way to the Battle at Appomattox Courthouse and the Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. On the night of April 2, 1865, the Confederate forces, including Lee, began moving towards Amelia Courthouse, where they requested supplies and decided to regroup after being attacked by Ulysses’s forces and cut off from supplies in Petersburg and Richmond. They arrived at Amelia Courthouse on April 4, 1865. They ended up not being able to get their supplies because Grant cut the supplies off.
The Battle of Shiloh, also known as “The Battle of Pittsburg Landing”, was fought in 1862 between the 6th and 7th of April (Historynet.com). The Battle of Shiloh was known to be the bloodiest battle of the Civil War at that point in time. A band of 40,000 confederate soldiers led by Albert Sidney Johnston, a Confederate Army General, composed this surprise attack on General Ulysses S. Grant’s encampment (Civilwar.org). The Battle of Shiloh contributed to the civil war by showing the South as well as the North, that the immense bloodshed from the battle meant that this war was not going to be short and easy, but long and difficult (Civilwar.org).
The Union was under the command of General Joseph Hooker who was new to the Union Army. General Lee and Jackson met together to discuss the battle and how to defeat the enemy. The two decided that Jackson would take 30,000 troops and attack from the side. Lee took 15,000 men and went around to the backside of the Union army . This was one of Lee’s tactics that he used the most, which was divide and conquer.
Did you know that most major Battles of the Civil War were draws? Although the Battle of Antietam was considered a draw, it still gave the Union army a large advantage. Along with the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Gettysburg was almost a draw, but the Union took the win. Later in the war, a General named Tecumseh Sherman thought that by destroying the southern infrastructure, he would revoke the south of its morale, and its ability to fight. A major theme of the Civil War was war was terrible, as supported by Battles of Antietam, Gettysburg, and General Sherman’s Total War.

Many people were involved in the battle of Vimy Ridge since two countries tried to take over the Ridge. Hundreds of thousands of casualties and deaths of German, Canadian, British and French deaths combined.
