“Censors undermine one of the primary function of education: teaching students how to think for themselves” (Webb). Since 2021, book bans have had a sharp increase impacting over 1,500+ titles, the amount of book bans are at an all time high. Due to this, classics such as “The Lord of The Flies” and “To kill a Mockingbird” which have been a staple in high school English Classrooms for decades are now unfortunately banned. In the book “Adventures of huckleberry Flinn” the timeline was set during the time of slavery, and the purpose was to show the American institutions at that time. “Twain's hero Huck Finn… is struggling to overcome his own racism. In one of the most moving paragraphs in American literature, Huck decides he’d rather “go to hell” then turn Jim, a runaway slave over to authorities. Huck’s struggle with his conscience in a society invested in white supremacy at every level is what students are deprived of when the book is banned because of the “n” word (Norman). This source makes it clear that individuals who desire to have certain historic pieces banned are not looking at the whole picture altogether. Novels are getting banned for inappropriate words while throwing away the main idea of the whole book. This book would be a great opportunity for classrooms to learn about the history of slavery, it gives us knowledge of what people said/did back then so we learn from it. This is significant because we have to teach the next generation about past mistakes so the next generation will not repeat the same mistakes. Books are great at captivating youths and allowing the reader to discover characters who experience similar issues similar to the reader. “controversial books are a type of virtual reality. Exploring complex topics like sexuality, violence, substance, abuse, and racism through well-drawn characters lets kids contemplate morality and vast aspects of the human condition, build empathy for people unlike themselves and possibly discover a mirror of their own experience” (McMahon). The point of these novels is to allow individuals to learn more about themselves. They also provide information about fellow peers they may meet, which then allows for stronger life-long bonds and mutual respect when meeting new people. This is significant because students will be able to understand the world better. Furthermore, young kids need relatable titles they can relate to. “Banned books often deal with subjects that are realistic, timely, and tropical. Young people may find a character going through exactly what they are, which makes a powerful experience and guides the readers to sort out thorny issues” (McMahon). Allowing students to read relatable stories, further expands a person's ability to comprehend what they are experiencing. Moreover, readers get a better understanding and broader point of view for why they might be feeling those emotions. Simply put, a
