Bless Me, Ultima is a coming-of-age story by Rudolfo Anaya. The book stirred up controversy on whether it should be allowed in schools or be banned. Many parents were not convinced with the book being read in school and saying that the book is ¨anti-catholic¨ and ¨sexually explicit¨. The book also contains profanity which does not make it any better. Many parents did not want their kids and/or teenagers to be reading a book with adult related subjects.The novel has been removed from schools in New Mexico (the setting of the novel), Colorado, Texas, and elsewhere in California. The reason for it being ¨anti-catholic¨ was the Golden Carp possibly giving children a different belief and also for including an atheist character, Florence. ¨Sexually explicit¨ was brought up because the novel includes prostitutes and shows a cow and a bull having sexual intercourse. Another reason for the hatred was for the many cursing the book contains. Antonio´s friends, the boys, curse more than any child should and some adults curse when stressed or in pain. …show more content…

Rudolfo Anaya, the author, said ¨What are these people afraid of?, When people ban books its because we are afraid of ideas and discussions.¨ Principals, teachers, and parents have the right to decide what is best for their students and kids. Bless Me, Ultima was number 75 on the most banned books in the 1990s. But, yet the author of the book still has his book on the school library
