Hannah Rivecca Mrs. Gommermann Honors English 10 06 May 2024. Emily Dickinson spent an abundance of time secluded by herself, while remaining within her family property. Citizens in Amherst during the 1830-50s knew exceptionally little details regarding the peculiar women. Firstly, she loved music, and secondly, she was an extraordinary gardener. Consequently, it brought quite a shock when the first round of her poetry, published by Higginson, came to light. Because of the fact that Emily was an extremely private person, few people genuinely knew the real Emily Dickinson. She was born on December 10th, 1830. Emily lived in Amherst, Massachusetts where her family ancestors first immigrated from England in the 1630s. The Dickinson family includes 5 members. Edward Dickinson, her father, Emily Dickinson, her mother. She also had 2 siblings, an older brother named Austin and a younger sister named Vinnie. Milton Meltzer - "The 'Milton Meltzer'" Her life has always been surrounded by education. Her grandfather Edward Dickinson helped fund a school called Amherst College. He firmly believes that education should include women. Emily and her sister went to numerous schools during their lifetime. She thoroughly enjoyed her time at school, surrounded by her teachers and her school mates. Emily was unique in the fact that she was never the one to publish her work. Thanks to her sister Vinnie, we have over 1700 of her poems and letters that she has written throughout the duration of her life. Emily’s poems were only intended to be read by the people she was closest to. Even now, there are countless letters that she has sent out that have not been recorded and sent to the public. Her poems are typically short. This style of writing is called lyric poetry. The Emily Dickinson Museum. Emily was also unique in the fact that she typically did not write her poems about major events going on in her life, for example the civil war. She wrote about feelings and thoughts that the narrator of the poem was feeling at the time. This inspired poets to write about what they wanted to, not what was expected of them to write about. While Emily did write about the war, she never mentioned it. She only talked about the infinite amount of deaths that it caused. Jamison, a writer in Common Reader, mentioned “Emily Dickinson has shaped and been shaped by the careers of women writers who must come to terms with this inescapable if changeful figure of the quintessential “poetess” as touchstone, inspiration and obstacles for their own work and its reception.” Emily Dickinson proved to society that a female poet could create great writing. She proved that it was important to send women to school to get an education, and she proved that any one in any class could become a great writer.
