Why Is It Important To Revitalize The City Of Charleston?

As the incoming 787 prepares for its final approach into Charleston International Airport. I come to wonder why this new unmarked aircraft is doing in the city of Charleston? Upon further investigation of this curiosity I concluded that Boeing Corporation is expanding it’s production plant along with a new paint shop across the street from the airport. So I ask myself as an Air Force Aviation technician what the benefits of the expansion will do the city of Charleston and it’s surrounding areas? Could this be a monopolistic or a perfectly market that they have entered? Also, if it could revitalize the local area and what effects does it have in the economy whether it is benefit or hindrance.

South Carolina has traditionally attracted multinational automakers for multiple reasons such as: cheap labor cost and industrial workers that are skilled. With these skilled workers one can assume that it also could apply to manufacturing airplanes. The local South Carolina government gives tax breaks to private firms to move to a location within the state. This in turn would expand business and prevent other companies from relocating due to lack of revenue. (McDavid, 2011). No you ask why Boeing decided on South Carolina as the city to produce its new “Dreamliner” one its close proximity to the international airport and port facilities. With the close proximity profit will grow due total cost lowering. South Carolina offered Boeing an incentive package worth $450 million for bring there plants into South Carolina. Another positive effect for the city of Charleston is that Boeing pumps $13.9 billion into the city accounting for 40% of the local economy. (McDavid, 2011) With Boeing contributing to almost half of the total revenue on the local Charleston community highly skilled workers will have job security for the next two decades that Boeing will be producing the new 787. In turn the state of South Carolina believes that non-resident employees will eventually bring their families to South Carolina contributing to the local economy.
