In chapter thirty-one Huck is feeling pressing guilt for the harboring of Jim. Huck felt the need to write to Miss Watson about the whereabouts of Jim. He writes to her saying “Miss Watson, your runaway nigger Jim is down here two mile below Pikesville, and Mr. Phelps has got him and will give him up for the reward if you send” (213). After writing the letter, Huck feels pure and that his sin of helping Jim escape is gone, and that he can pray now. Huck thinks that this is the right thing to do and that this decision will bring him clarity.
By the end of the book, he had started to realize that he really did care about Jim. Huck is writing Miss Watson a letter towards the end of the book talking about where Jim is and how she can get him back. After writing the letter, Huck starts to think about the good times he had with Jim and says that “...somehow I couldn’t seem to strike no places for me to harden against him, but only the other kind.”(213). This was the most powerful part in the book for me because after thinking of all the good that Jim has brought him, he tears up the paper and says “All right, then, I’ll go to hell”(214). In Huck’s mind, he had the choice to send the letter and go to heaven or to try to save Jim and go to Hell for doing the wrong thing as far as the widow taught him.
Then huck again met two people one of them was a Theater person and the other was a person talking about being drunk was stupid but after he did that he got drunk. That did not put a good thing about him on him . So the townspeople did not like them and chased them out. Then they bumped into huck and got on the boat with Huck and Jim.
(p.71) Huck did not need to go back to get Jim, He could have ran away by himself for a better chance of survival, but he didn 't think twice as to help Jim as well. Huck thinks of Jim as Human while Mrs.Loftus thinks of him as more of an animal saying “ They 'll go after him at midnight.. he’ll likely be asleep, and they can slip around through the woods and hunt up his camp fire all the better for the dark, if he 's got one.” It sounds like he 's about ready to go hunt for a deer
Huck had multiple chances to turn Jim in or not to help him when he was in trouble, but he could never bring himself to turn his back on Jim. From the time they first saw each other on the river, Huck felt a certain loyalty toward Jim. They both agreed not to give away the other’s location, this agreement brought a loyalty between them. “ Well I did. I said I wouldn’t
When Huck hears this from Jim, it tares at Huck. He decides not to turn in Jim (which he could have done easily.) Huck’s conscience basically ate him alive. Huck was on the verge of turning in Jim, and seemed that was what he should do. However after thinking about it, Huck decided he would feel worse if he turned Jim in as opposed to keeping him free.
Huck had a plight while on the run with the runaway slave, Jim. Harvesting and helping a runaway slave was a crime, but Huck just could not let Jim go. Huck cared immensely for Jim as any friend would. That much was a risk worth taking to Huck. In document E, Huck says, “‘All right, then, I’ll go to hell’ -and tore it up.”
While on the Mississippi, Huck developed into a heartwarming and courageous character. He learned many morals on the way that brought him to a well matured young man, with a strong personality. When Huck is pondering whether to write Miss. Watson he thinks a lot about Jim and says, “and got to thinking over our trip down the river, and I see Jim before me, all the time, in the day, and in the night-time (Twain 161). Huck’s transformation helped him realize how much Jim truly means to him.
While Huck is trying to get food for the trip from a nearby farmhouse, someone tells the lady who is being kind to him because she thinks he’s a nice little girl, that a runaway slave has killed Huck Finn! They’re gathering up townspeople to go hunt him down. Huck escapes after the lady figures out he’s a boy in disguise, and runs for his life. He finds Jim, tells him a posse is chasing him, and that they should travel at night to avoid being caught. Huck and Jim find a wanted reward poster for the capture of Huck’s
Huck is looking for a father, and Jim is looking to join a family. The two complement each other well (4). Helping an escaped slave is a criminal offense during this period of time. It could be argued that Huck is not fully aware of the consequences of his actions, but as the reader sees time and time again, Huck is a very wise, very practical, very street-smart boy.
Huck, therefore, sees Jim as his friend and ignores society’s expectations to treat him less than human. After tearing up the letter he writes to Miss Watson, Huck “... studied a minute, sort of holding my breath, and then says to myself: ‘All right, then, I’ll go to hell’” (214). Huck realizes that Jim is in need of assistance so he decides to do what is morally correct, which is to help Jim escape.
But Huck also feels like he can not turn Jim in because deep down he knows that Jim’s life will be better not being a slave. This shows that Huck battles between himself whether to follow society’s rules or his own morlas. When Huck chooses to not turn Jim in as a runaway slave, that makes it evident that he matures or so it
In this selected passage Huck decides he is not going to send the letter he wrote to Miss Watson with the intention of turning Jim in. Huck initially writes the letter because he is thinking about God and his state of sin, as he believes he is committing a sin by stealing another person’s property. He never sends the letter because he realized how much he trusts Jim and doesn’t see him as his property, but rather as a best friend. Previously he has stayed with Jim because it was easy, but this scene marks the time when he is able to stay by Jim’s side even when he believes it will come at a great personal cost.
Huck has been burned with the idea that he is to blame for Jim’s escape. Huck ultimately feels guilty because he knows he has not done wrong but he has no reason not to believe what society thinks because he was only taught one way. Huck imagines an alternate scenario, thinking “s’pose [he]’d’ a’ done right and give Jim up, would [he] felt better... No…[he'd] feel bad” (91). Huck is aware that the right decision based on society is to give up Jim.
In 2010, a newly made mother named Alexandra Tobias allegedly killed her 3-month old son after getting angry when he wouldn’t stop crying. She picked him up and shook him several times and hit his head against the wall, killing him instantly. State guidelines are still keeping her to stay in prison for another 43 years. When this story is told people will usually gasp and get mad at the mother. How could someone be so cruel and inhumane?
