Napoleon was a whirlwind of military genius, sweeping across Europe with incredible speed and force during the French Revolution. He played a significant role in overthrowing the Directory in 1799 and establishing the Cosulate, and becoming Consul for Life in 1802. Although he was justified in these aspects he wasn’t justified in appointing himself emperor because it was a power grab of greed. This speech argues that Napoleon was justified in overthrowing the Directory and being Consul for Life.

Napoleon became Consul for Life on the 4th of August 1802 because he wanted to make his reforms permanent in France. This was approved by the judges and the French population through a vote. The aftermath of the Reign of Terror and the continuous war in Europe caused France to be in a state of “social and political upheaval.” As he had already proved himself to be a “charismatic” leader during his reign as First Consul through his many treaties such as; the Treaty of Paris which stopped the wars between France and the Allies in 1815. Another justification was that continued to allow Napoleon to make and defend his reforms. Because the title of First Consul only lasted for 10 years, he was worried that “they would roll back the reforms he had worked so hard to push through.” He had already made significant reforms for the growth of France such as the development of the new currency (franc) which eliminated inflation, a problem that could have continued for decades in France. As consul for life, Napoleon would able to continue making advantageous reforms for France without the need for constant negotiation. Therefore, Napoleon was definitely justified in being appointed Consul for Life for the growth, stability and efficiency of France and the
