Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a very inspirational artist in the impressionist era, and one of the finest. He believed in expressing the joys of life within his painting. He used bright colours in his paintings, always avoiding the colour black which created negative space. “Renoirs subjects were invariably crowd pleasers: beautiful women (often nude) flowers, pretty children, sunny outdoor scenes full of people and fun” (Strickland, p. 104). In the early years of Renoir’s career, he created Le Moulin de la Galette in 1876. “Dance at le Moulin de la Galette is also known as Bal du moulin de la Galette and it is hailed as one of Renoir's most important works of the mid 1870s” (Artable, 2017). Many of the subjects within the painting were Renoirs friends. The picture uses various bright colours with smooth brush strokes within the dark figures. He used the space in the painting appropriately; small lanterns in the background, people dancing in the middle ground, and his friends exchanging conversation in the foreground. This painting truly represents the Impressionism era, as well as the changing evolution in the French society. The painting shows his friends engaging in joyful conversation, drinking wine and eating food at the Maison Fournaise restaurant in Chatou. The women depicted on the far left of painting is Renoir’s future wife, showing her looking at a dog. Renoir used bright colours in this panting to keep a warm, joyful mood.
