Ever since the technology evolution inspired by the rise of military-industrial complex, the government and private corporations funded millions of research with the goal to improve people’s welfare. With such noble ambition in mind, Eisenhower reminds us in his last speech that intellectual and capitalism should be independent. Research for the purpose of welfare improvement should not be hinder or delay by any other special interest. However, in today food industry, research for health improvement are pushed aside by research for sales enhancement. Funded by corporations who sole interest is to increase their profit, Pollen claims that many “food scientists spend their days designing the future of food- its flavor, texture, and packaging (92).”
In the twentieth century, the government of the United States began taking more of an interest in the food industry. Soon after the twentieth century began, the government realized the harsh conditions in the factories and how unsanitary they were so they went from favoring big businesses to passing laws against the cruelties they did and regulating the items sold in the United States. Food regulation and laws are a normal part of our life. In the early 1900’s, big businesses were ruthless and more concerned with making larger profits than the quality of its products. Also, in that time, the competition between businesses was scarce opposed to today’s market. There are countless number of businesses and companies in which one can purchase their goods from. This causes companies to really focus on the quality of their product in order to please the consumer.
The entire book focuses on the fact that we, as individuals, need to be more informed on the process of producing our food as well as the actual ingredients in our food. Not everyone is going to change but approaching this one person at a time can change the world.
Australia experienced much diversity of cuisines as a result of the many different people living in Australia however, many different types of food didn’t become popular until much later. In 1945, 300 restaurants were operating within Australia and 23 of those were Chinese, the first international cuisine readily available within Australia. Fish and chips also became popular within Australia during the 1950’s and as it was before the time of plastic containers people had to improvise with how to carry their bought food; taking up saucepans to carry food. During the 1950’s and 1960’s meat production still relied on grazing, meaning that many people ate more beef and lamb before increasing factory methods increased the consumption of chicken. The Australian diet also dramatically changed in the 1950’s with the influx of food from Italy and Greek such as; zucchinis, capsicum, eggplants, globe artichokes and the previously maligned garlic.
My opinion about the food industry is that it full of lies that help large corporation to make more money no matter how the animals much suffer. Also they don’t care about the health of people neither because the government lays on the labels of the food that people has consumed. People have to know “how ethical arguments” work and to find the proof of the arguments. For example on of the argument is that “actions can be justified by small consequences. This could be describing as the labels changing into the consumer choice of product that they want to buy.
Several acts have been passed that protect the safety and health of United States Consumers. The Food and Drug act of 1906 requires that there be unity and uniformity among food and drug products, and restricts the sale of hazardous goods. The Food Code of 2013 sets standards for food processing. The Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act ensures that products are not only safe for consumers, but that they are also fully aware of the goods they are buying. These acts beginning in 1906, have protected the public’s health, and prevented illness for over 100 years.
