Background

1. SGT Van Droffelaar was deployed to Vietnam in 1969 as a part of the 3rd Special Air Services Squadron, where his actions under fire earned him a Military Medal.

Scope

2. SGT Van Droffelaar’s actions during the Vietnam war in 1969 and the ADFA values.

Aim

3. To discuss and inform about how the ADFA values, and SGT Van Droffelaar’s story can help develop my leadership capability.

THE ADFA VALUES

4. The ADFA values exist to help guide trainee officers (TOs) in their journey to become junior officers of the ADF, by representing what the ADF and individual services require of their officers. The values are courage, respect, integrity, service, and professionalism.

5. Courage is the ability to do what you feel is right in any situation. To face adversity and danger and not back away from what needs to be done in any circumstance.

Whilst his professionalism and bravery are commendable, SGT Van Droffelaar was able to be effective through his respect for the land he was fighting in, as well as his men. Trusting them to do what needed to be done, willing to give it all for them because he knew they would be willing to give it all for him. His knowledge of the land and how to fight in it enabled him to move himself and his troops through the jungle effectively whilst under fire.

19. SGT Van Droffelaar’s consistent performance out in the field is especially noteworthy due to him holding his rank temporarily, having been a private beforehand. This ability to step up to the challenge and perform remarkably is indicative of his great ability as a leader, and his personal integrity. The capability to do this is a great merit to his character and shows the trust his superiors had in him.

20. SGT Van Droffelaar showed a great ability to lead effectively, and it was based on his ability to perform tasks in accordance to his character, which shows great connections to the ADFA values.
