Books are worth reading because they are full of imagination and new information. Writing books, on the other hand, is a lot more difficult but, still, worth it. Writing a book lets you put your own spin on things and people, even though they may not know it, need the books that others have dedicated so much of their time for. In Fahrenheit 451 Captain Beatty says on page 39: “Speed up the film Montag, quick. Click?
In Dana Gioias’ essay,“Why Literature Matters”, Dana uses logic to argue on why literature reading is significant, and how a dramatic decrease of literature readers is critically affecting our society today. The essay provides reliable facts and evidence from scientific studies over the years. Gioia claims, with facts, that the detreimental decline in literature reading has affected more than just our reading skills. Studies show that reading has increased our mental skills and intelligence, leading to a higher chance of success for individuals. Gioia exemplifies this by using the quote “A 2003 study of 15-to-26-years-olds’ civic knowledge by the National Conference of State Legislatures concluded ,young people do not understand the ideals
The ability to read and write is both creative and destructive. This ability opens your eyes to the world and how beautiful it can be. It also has the potential to destroy your entire grip on reality and expose you to the actual world you live in. It imprisons you yet, releases you from your mental confinement. Some people never escape from this confinement, some do; and those who escape sometimes go on to do great things in life.
Personal Literacy Narrative Reading and writing is a tool everybody needs in their lifetime the basic reading and writing skills are used on a daily base no matter what field you plan to study. Reading and writing are taught at a young age. In my mind, literature is a constant present in our lives as it is the best way to express opinions to a wide audience, a viewpoint echoed by Anthony Burgess in A Clockwork Orange: "We can destroy what we have written, but we cannot unwrite it". The messages conveyed live on despite a censorship of said texts. Burgess' novel, as well as Orwell's 1984 which holds similar views of how freedom, regardless of the consequences or form it takes, is what makes us human, have both been ironically banned at some point in history for their 'controversial' nature. I believe that studying literature from a wide variety of sources is important to developing a true understanding of the social environment in which we live in, as through them we can see a cascade of different ideologies offering an unfiltered insight into all walks of life. I believe that a degree in literature will not only develop my cultural awareness, but help develop both my written and verbal communication skills.
