Was It Necessary? On December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese Navy Air Services in Honolulu, Hawaii. The atomic bomb, which is a nuclear bomb is a controversial topic since it was dropped and used during World War II. On one side, it is argued that dropping the bomb was most definitely needed in order to put an end to this war which would save potential lives. The rest say that the use of the atomic bomb was a moral outrage due to it resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians dying and the long-term suffering of survivors. There were many reasons why they believed so. First off, America had already tried many other ways to defeat Japan, such as conventional bombing and blockades. These methods used by the United States were not effective in forcing Japan to surrender. The Atomic bomb was obviously a military weapon and its devastating strength would most surely convince the Japanese that surrender was their only option. It is also argued that if we didn’t drop the bomb Japanese would not surrender due to the fact that it is seditious, meaning it is against the law. By dropping the Atomic bombs, on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the United States was able to bring an end to the war very quickly which resulted in the prevention of further loss. However, on the other hand, there are strong arguments against the use of the atomic bomb. The victims of the bombing went through serious trauma, 370,000 Japanese civilians all shared similar psychological traits such as lingering fears, imbalances, and breakdowns. Some Japanese survivors walked through dead bodies to escape their houses. This was most definitely a tragedy since so many people that had no connection to the war had to go through this.
