Why do people conform to certain groups?

Abstract

This essay with examine the meaning and the reasons behind people conforming to certain groups. People conform for several different reasons, yet fitting in tends to be the greatest influence to conform. There are two main influence when trying to understand how conformity works, informative and normative. Informative is when we believe that we are learning something from what somebody else is doing and we believe that it is right. Solomon Asch's experiment focuses on the study of informative influence. Normative is when we only agree but believe that they are wrong. The Abilene paradox entertains the idea of agreeing with a group even though all of the members feel the same and this causes the group to do something the opposite that they want. We conform everyday without realizing it, yet some conformities must be made in order to keep peace within a group or even country. There are different ways of conforming and these two ways are called normative and informational influence and these two consist of reason why we may conform to a society. Many researchers have come to understand the depths of conforming in society and the positive and negative effects. The Abilene paradox is a story that results into a theory to explain why a group may agree to something that none of them actually believe in. We live in a society that pressures us to conform to be accepted and whether they do this with age, gender, culture, or size of the group does not matter just the factor of being conforming can become detrimental if one does not process their own thoughts and
