Why do people shoot small bucks year after year? Is it meaningful or do they do it to show it off? Sometimes I ask myself the same questions. I was brought up to shoot a small one then keep going bigger every year, or to let them go to grow another year. I always wonder if people think about how many big bucks there would be if more small/little bucks were passed up each year. The potential for monster bucks is there, but not only one person in the community can be letting young bucks go knowing that they will probably step over the property line and get shot. Back in 2010, when I was hunting on one of the better properties I am able to hunt on, I passed up two small basket rack six points. The very next day I went out to the exact same spot and hunted. As I was leaving I noticed two deer hanging in a tree out behind a house, I put the truck in reverse to take a look at them. Then people try to help out by saying, “it's alright” and giving sympathy when they don't need any because they are the ones who shot the deer it's nobody else's fault but their own. But what really sets me off is on opening day the next year when they come and tell me about their morning out and how they saw a couple small bucks and I just look and them and think maybe if you pasted some up you might see a big buck once in awhile. Don't come and complain to others about your wrongs especially if it's something that you can prevent. Hunting isn't about shooting deer and having stories. It's about being in nature and preserving the animals we have and thanking god that we get to wake up every morning and experience the thrill and being up close and personal with the nature that surrounds us
