Why Power Isn’t Equal How does the irresponsible use of power influence others’ decisions? When power is abused, it has an effect on multiple peoples’ lives that may cause great change. This is shown periodically throughout the play by an important figure that is trusted immensely known as Friar Lawrence. Friar Lawrence ended up affecting Romeo and Juliet’s relationship through his misuse of power and laziness displayed throughout the play. The Friar from Romeo and Juliet is responsible for their youthful death by marrying the two young lovers without parental consent for the sake of trying to bring the combatant families together and wanting to change the way they viewed each other after marriage. Friar Lawrence then states, “Young men's love then lies not truly in their hearts but in their eyes” (3.2.71-72). This is important because he proves that Romeo isn’t looking at what’s within Juliet, but it’s his attraction to Juliet’s looks that makes him feel this way. The Friar then ignored his advice and therefore decided to marry them anyways, knowing that the parents wouldn’t be fond of this idea. Moreover, the Friar also openly adds later “In one respect I'll thy assistant be,/ for this alliance may so happy prove/ to turn your households’ rancor to pure love” (2.3.97-99). The Friar says this because he wants to bring the years worth of rage to an end. His best idea? Marry the young new couple without telling anyone. This plan includes the following: Juliet will agree to the marriage with Paris on Thursday. On Wednesday, Juliet will drink from a vial that will stop her pulse and make her appear dead, but she will wake in 48 hours. Once they move Juliet to the Capulet tomb, Romeo will meet her there, and they will be together (4.1.91-123). This is key because if Juliet didn’t accept this plan she still may have been able to be with Romeo at some point. This provides deeper evidence that the Friar is responsible for his poor planning and irresponsibility based on his inability to make a plan. But, the plan takes a turn when the letter that was supposed to be sent to Romeo containing the details doesn’t make it to him, so he finds a poor apothecary to sell him a cheap poison to later drink and die next to Juliet’s tomb (5.1.35-end). This connects back to the Friar because of his insensitivity to take into account some of the problems that may come with the plan, resulting in Romeo committing a crime. Eluding the poison he’s buying, causes instant death upon drinking which shows how his actions resulted in Romeo thinking this will be the only way the two lovers end up with each other. So this takes us to Juliet’s tomb where
