During harry S. Truman's presidency he was faced with one of the most world altering decisions in the war against japan. The use of atomic weapons would set an example of the united states of america’s military strength, power and knowledge of a very destructive technology. It was necessary for president Truman to drop the atomic bomb on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki for these reasons. American soilders were tired from the four years of fighting and a surrender from Japan was not in sight.. In (Doc L) it says the bomb saved more lives than killed people in the end, President Truman needed to retaliate for their attack on Pearl Harbor and the bomb would just end the war more quicker.
I believe that the bombing of Japan was an over the top choice by the Americans. This way of bombing the Japanese was very inhumane, and left thousands dead. The A-bomb was extremely inhumane, there were a number of other options that the americans could have used, instead of bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Some might think that the A-bomb saved america, but it destroyed Japan. They didn’t realize how much the A-bomb would affect the people and the whole country of Japan, the 20,000 kilojoule bomb killed 140,000 people within the months that followed.
President Harry Truman was justified in dropping the atomic bomb since it saved millions of American lives by ending the war as soon as possible, and established the United States as the greatest country in the world. With the bomb, America could “attack those that have hurt [America]” and save many American lives (Truman, Doc A). As part as revenge for Pearl Harbor, America was able to redeem itself against Japan with this bomb. It would make a statement to the world and force an unconditional surrender from Japan, as fast as possible. That would end the war and potentially save millions of young American soldiers.
If the U.S. did not use the atomic bomb, the war could have killed more American soldiers because Japanese soldiers fought to the death. “The U.S. had sustained more than 75,000 casualties.” (Historical Background). The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was just retaliation for Japan's bombing of Pearl Harbor. The bombing was not really about saving lives.
If the atomic bomb were not dropped the war would have lasted longer, ending in more lives lost and wasted materials. Another reason that dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was justified is, the Japanese had already done so much damage to the US with pearl harbor, They had it coming with damage done to them. “A Kamikaze Pilot's Manual” (Document #9) In the three pictures you can see the horrifying pearl harbor attack summed up in only 3 images, before, during, and the aftermath.
From my stand point, I believe that President Harry Truman felt he had no other choice. The Japanese were not going to surrender and Truman made a military decision to use the first atomic bomb. I truly feel the bomb was necessary and crucial to ending the World War II. There were already so many casualties and, yes, the bombing did produce many casualties but what if we had not used the bomb; how many casualties would there have been if the war just had continued? By using the atomic bombs, Truman ensured that no more American lives would be spared and protecting Americans was his top priority.
The Japanese were already on the verge of surrendering, so there was no point on dropping the bomb. Also, President Truman could have just shown an image or chart of the atomic bomb, rather than actually going through with the plan. These examples illustrate how the atomic bomb will always be a big controversy, but America was right for dropping the
We decided to use the bomb because Iwo Jima and Okinawa showed that Japan would fight on even in the face of defeat. We used the bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We used the bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki because we didn’t have a choice. We were going to drop the bombs somewhere else but because of weather we had to drop the bombs where we could so we dropped
Japan and America were fighting during World War II. America was pushing into Japan. The Americans could either drop the Atomic Bomb or continue the war on land. While some may say the United States was not justified in dropping the Atomic Bomb because Japan was trying to surrender, the United States was justified because it saved more lives in the long run, shortened the war, and It showed that America was a country not to be messed with. Dropping the Atomic Bombs, the United States helped save lives.
There are many reasons why it could be argued that the dropping of the atomic bomb was justified. One reason is that Japan was warned, they were given plenty of opportunities to surrender such as the Potsdam declaration. The Declaration was issued to Japan by President Truman and the Allies of America after America had tested the Atom bomb on July 26th. The declaration was a proposition of surrender to Japan that linked directly to the dropping of the atomic bomb.
Thousands of Japanese military personal and civilians were killed the dropping of the atomic bomb. This was a very important turn the war because the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki forced the Japanese to surrender rand withdraws from the war. The American government did the right thing when they bombed Japan. America wanted to end the war with Japan and they believed that an economic blockade and conventional bombing would force the Japanese to surrender and pull out of World War II .President stated that the bomb was a military weapon and that he never had any doubts that it should be used as such.
I think the United States should have not dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki because the atomic bombs was too expensive and it was not really worth it, they wiped out two entire cities, and Japan was planning on surrendering. The atomic bomb they used on Nagasaki cost 2 billion
