The cell membrane is semi-permeable, meaning some substances can pass through but others cannot. Osmosis is the diffusion of solvent molecules (e.g. water) across the membrane from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration (Lopez & Hall, 2022). When the fluid on the extracellular side of the cell has a higher concentration than the cytosolic side it is hypertonic. When it is lower than the cytosolic side it is hypotonic. When both sides of the membrane have equal concentrations, they are isotonic.
In walled cells, turgor pressure, the resistance to water movement by the cell wall, also affects osmosis. When cells are placed in a hypertonic solution, one with a higher solute concentration and lower water potential, water will move from the cell to the solution, causing the cell to be flaccid, or limp. Ehrenreich’s writing in Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America is very powerful, brutally honest, and extremely engaging. She gained so much from her experiences, and we gained even more when reading them. Although she cheated on few occasions, she gives a clear insight into what poverty is, and how a life in a low pay, heavy workforce is not a life at all.

The Reality of the Sense of Space In Barbara Ehrenreich’s Nickel and Dimed, Ehrenreich takes a hands-on experimental approach in an attempt to immerse herself in the life of someone who lives on minimum wage. Although this is an experiment, Ehrenreich fully submerges herself in a lifestyle that she is not accustomed to. She remains open and honest to her readers, unveiling the difficulties of everyday life and the struggle to simply “make ends meet” in a world where prices are rising, but minimum wage remains stagnant. In relation to Ehrenreich’s experiences, a comparison can be made with Doreen Massey’s ideas of the degree of “mobility that influences the sense we have of space and place” (Massey p. 258). With Ehrenreich’s limited amount of resources, the world seems to be larger, as making her way around becomes more difficult.
In the first experiment displaying a semipermeable membrane and diffusion, we first filled up a 500 mL beaker with 300 mL of water and added 40 drops of potassium iodide solution to the water. We slowly stirred the mixture to make sure the potassium iodide was completely even throughout the water. We then took a dialysis bag and soaked it in water for few seconds to make it easier to open up the seal. We tied up one end of the dialysis bag with a piece of string and filled the bag with 13 mL of dissolved cornstarch in water. Then we tied up the other end of the dialysis bag with a piece of string and placed the bag into potassium iodide and water solution.

However, it is now known that that is not the fact, and that adding salt will do the opposite and make the water boil more slowly instead.
In this lab when looking at cells, we observed the salinity and osmolarity of the cell when placed in the environment. With the different concentrations of NaCl, we are able to see how different environment can constrain an organism and see the wide range of responses to regulate in cell’s osmolarity. The cells we studied was sheep red blood cells (erythrocyte), because they are the most studied membrane system and therefore used as ideal membrane to study the relationship between water and the passing of the different concentration of NaCl across the membrane. The purpose of the experiment was to observe the cell and infer which direction of the flow of the water due to the cell volume change.

If the Visking tube is absorbed in water, after a period of time, it will be have water inside water, this is because the water molecules can pass through the tubing, while the larger sugar molecules cannot diffuse out from the tubing because the size of sugar molecules do not allow it to go through the tubing.
