Why 21 is Working. There are many controversial topics. Among those topics, drinking age makes the top list. When young adults turn 21, the first thing that comes to mind is that they have hit the legal drinking age. The minimum drinking age is 21 and has been ever since the 1980’s. While most countries in Europe have a Maximum Legal Drinking Age (MLDA) is 18 and alcohol related problems are less of a major issue than in the U.S. Americans are wanting the drinking age to go back 18, arguing that Europe does not have alcohol problems because their MLDA is 18. The National Minimum Drinking Age Act was signed by President Ronald Regan in hopes of reducing accidents related to alcohol. There are more reasons besides reducing drinking and driving. According to the chart, most of the drinking is being done by teens. The chart depicts that only a small amount of youths wait until they are legal to start drinking. Lowering MLDA will encourage and increase the amount of drinking among young teens. It will also lead to an increase in risky behavior which will have dire consequences for youth. “Letting younger people drink is giving immature citizens more of the ability to make bad decisions that not only affect themselves but can also be very harmful to others”. (BigJohny) With risk taking actions of teens can lead them into dangerous situations. The number of nightclubs and bars will increase, resulting in more crime. “Lowering the drinking age would be accompanied by other harmful behavior such as unplanned or unwanted sexual activity, violence, alcohol poisoning, etc”. (SpeakUp) Binge drinking is also a big problem in high schools and colleges. The rates of binge drinking will continue to increase if the MLDA is lowered to 18.
