Without Lenin and the Bolsheviks the revolution wouldn’t have happened, however there were many other reasons as to why there was a revolution in 1917.

The role of Lenin was key for the Bolsheviks to be able to seize power. Lenin spoke to the people and he promised what they wanted. His short and simple slogans like ‘Peace, land and bread’ were very appealing to the working class of Russia as they were easily understood by the average person. One of these promises was to end the war, which meant the Bolsheviks gained a lot of support as a lot of people wanted to end it. These promises couldn’t have received as many supporters without Lenin’s energy and conviction. This spirit and energy was then spread over to the Bolsheviks. Without Lenin the Bolsheviks wouldn’t have been able to seize power as without him there would be no leader and as many supporters

Also, the role of Trotsky played a big part in staging the revolution. Trotsky started of as a Menshevik however later he became a Bolshevik bringing many supporters with him. Also, he became the chairman of the Petrograd soviet and the leader of the Red Guard which meant he had a lot of power. Firstly, they went elected therefore they didn’t represent the people meaning the people of Russian’s concerns went addressed and nothing changed. The provisional government had dual authority which meant the shared power with the Petrograd soviet. This made them very weak but it was made worse by Soviet Order no.1 which stated that the Petrograd soviet had control of the army and that the Provisional government couldn’t do anything without the Petrograd soviet’s consent. Finally, the Kornilov revolt made them seem very weak and unpowerful as they had called upon the Bolshevik and the Red Guard to help them making them powerful and gain more
