An Italian explorer responsible for the European discovery of America in 1492. Columbus wanted to sail across the ocean to find Asia and all the riches they had. Columbus never reached Asia because he sailed west across the Atlantic instead of sailing south around Africa and then east. Although Columbus did not ever reach Asia he landed on a small island in the Caribbean. Columbus named that island San Salvador.

However he does not deserve this credit due to the way he treated the Native Americans, the legacy he left behind and the fact that he didn’t discover anything. Christopher punished those who questioned him, forced rape upon the Natives and forced the Native Americans to move west. He left behind a legacy of slavery, greed and genocide.

What they don’t consider is how his discovery changed and affected America. First of all, Columbus’ discovery provided the start of a long term colonization, which created what we know today as America. He started a new surge in exploration and inspired many people to go out on their own adventures and expeditions. Once people realized that the world was not flat they went out to explore places that had never been explored before.
