Christopher columbus is worthy for a national holiday because he brought new crops and horses to america. He is worthy because he brought crops from europe and horses from europe. He brought rice,apples oranges,bananas and coffee. If he didn 't bring crops there might not of been enough food. Also they would not have been able to get food as fast.
British Columbia, Columbia, Colombo, District of Columbia, the Columbia river, and Columbus day are all named after the one and only, Christopher Columbus. Christopher Columbus has many things named after him and is one of the most celebrated and renowned men in America even though his is not American. He was the first person to really explore the Americas and stay to colonize. Without him life as we know it would be exponentially different. We have him to thank for our freedom from Europe.
On the second Monday of October, every year children across the country learn about “brave...and..bright” (Marzollo) Christopher Columbus who “In fourteen hundred ninety-two..sailed the ocean blue.” (Marzollo). They’re taught that this Italian explorer and his entourage of curious men befriended the Arakawa natives and genuinely had an all-around good time. Sadly that was not the case. Christopher Columbus should in no way be celebrated, because he was an arrogant man, was the catalyst to slavery in the New World, and committed inhumane acts against the Natives.
Personally, I feel that Columbus Day should not be celebrated because of the fact that he did not actually “discover” the Americas. As well as the cruelty and brutality he had spread through his travels, which had an effect on so many people. It is actually a fact that Columbus never even discovered America as he had never set foot on the North American continent in the first place. A story of discovery and friendship or a tale of conquest, murder, and greed, which of these are Christopher Columbus’ true stories? I believe the best method to teach American high school students about Christopher Columbus’ story is through historiography because historiography teaches students to compare and distinguish different outlooks from different writers’ point of views instead of just remembering misinterpreted facts. Historiography would guide and force students to study and learn history through a diverse set of historians who focused on the same subject and come to different conclusions.
When I was younger I was under the impression that Christopher Columbus was a great man and that he discovered America. We celebrate Columbus day because we honor him for “discovering America”. From this new information that I have learned today, Christopher Columbus is not the man iv have been taught about.
I think Columbus Day should not be a national holiday. For example, Columbus took over the natives land. He thought he discovered it himself, but he didn’t. Another thing is, Columbus wanted to conquer the men in the village and make them be his slaves. In fact, he brought over diseases from Italy, and other places.
In today’s society, we celebrate many holidays for certain symbols, events, or people. We celebrate many people as holidays but one of those individuals that we celebrate is the man who technically discovered America, Christopher Columbus. For Christopher Columbus Day, we celebrate Christopher Columbus’ journey to America and helping to help the Eastern world to come colonize North America. While we can see Columbus is as a hero on Columbus Day, he can also be a villain to many.
Finally, we should celebrate Columbus Day because he brought value to America. When I say "value" I mean he made America worth something. Not money-wise but more livable through goods and services for citizens here in America. Basically the "west Indies" people lived off natural resources and made shelter from their surroundings. When Christopher Columbus arrived he made businesses for people who wanted to work, and he made trade markets for people who wanted to buy goods from the old world such as jewelry, jewels, spices, perfume, etc; only the wealthy bought such items.
I agree with you that we should celebrate Columbus day. Maybe not necessarily the same way we do now. Perhaps if we follow what Denver, CO did. You mentioned in paragraph 10 that they, “offered a compromise involving an Italian Pride parade without mention of Columbus”. This still brings awareness to their culture and celebrates their past, present, and future.
The source, Christopher Columbus’s Journal, is a personal written account by Columbus of his time sailing to the New World and exploring it. Columbus's original Journals were lost. The original copies were sent to the King and Queen, however the parts that are left are from Bartoleme de Las Cases, one of the first men to come to the New World.
