Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer, navigator, and colonizer who is well known for “discovering” North America. In reality Christopher was trying to get to China and thought he was in Japan all 4 times he went to North America. He was actually in what is now the Bahamas and Cuba. And really Christopher didn't even discover America. The Native Americans beat Columbus by thousands of years.
Furthermore, Christopher Columbus was a very greedy man that only wanted to be rich and famous. He later got arrested for his greed and immorality and taken back to Spain. Christopher Columbus day is insulting to many American Indians and many native-born Americans. Many Americans oppose Christopher Columbus day. Columbus’ expeditions set in motion the worldwide transfer of people, plants, animals, diseases, and cultures that greatly affected nearly every society on the planet.
Christopher Columbus has been viewed as both a positive historical hero and someone who was selfish and brought harm and misfortune to the Indians to benefit the white men. When flipping through a history textbook or sitting through a high school history course Columbus is viewed as a hero who embarked on many expeditions that helped others as well as brought people together with an abundance of goods. God, glory, gold, government, and geography motivated Columbus on his voyages. Columbus discovered land that he believed to be the Indies, which is what led him to identifying the natives as Indians. The people Columbus met were welcoming to Columbus and his men although they didn’t have the spices that were originally expected and needed.
We were told about his great adventures and significant discoveries. Our textbooks describe him as a hero who changed the world for the good by following his dreams. Columbus was seen as such an influential person that we even had a holiday named after him. All of this is what we’re taught in history
In October of 1492, Portuguese explorer Christopher Columbus landed by ship in the “New World” which is today known as the Americas. Many people believe the holiday that honors him annually in October has great meaning behind it. However, I believe Columbus day should not be celebrated. Christopher Columbus was not the first person ever to discover the Americas, he abused natives on their own land, and the holiday isn’t celebrated in the way it should be. Christopher Columbus was not the first to discover the Americas.
Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492. Columbus was an explorer that had his heart set on searching for the americas. So much that did so, which led to him having his own name on various school, memorials, and his very own day. Many people say that he should not his own day because was rude to the natives on the islands he found. Columbus should have his own day because he was not only an explorer, he had many achievements, and there are many events in history that the U.S. is not happy about.
When I was younger I was under the impression that Christopher Columbus was a great man and that he discovered America. We celebrate Columbus day because we honor him for “discovering America”. From this new information that I have learned today, Christopher Columbus is not the man iv have been taught about.
Christopher Columbus is a man who is commonly depicted as a hero and great explorer who discovered our modern day America, but many of the so called “facts” are not all completely true as people would like to believe. Columbus was undoubtedly a courageous explorer who brought many new ideas, cultures, and resources to be exchanged between the New World and Europe. While this is true, it is not uncommon for people to forget the harmful effects brought along with the voyages made by Columbus and the darker details of his times in America. Columbus started from humble middle class family. Columbus was born in 1451 in the Republic of Genoa as the oldest of his four siblings.
Columbus day should it be celebrated? Some say no. Christopher Columbus is known for being the man that discovered the Americas in 1492, but some people think that he was the sole culprit of genocide, or mass murder of a large group of people, of an certain ethnic group, but usually when people think of genocide they most likely think of Hitler, and the holocaust during WW2, and not a great man who found America, and made Spain rich. Many think that the holiday should still be celebrated like the author of “Sail On”, while not as many people don’t think it should still be celebrated like the author of “Should Columbus have a holiday”. There are five countries in total that celebrate the holiday all three of the Americas(North, South, and Central), Italy, and Spain, but that means that there are hundreds if not thousands of people that don’t think that it should not be celebrated for whatever reason that have for example most of the Native Americans died.
Finally, we should celebrate Columbus Day because he brought value to America. When I say "value" I mean he made America worth something. Not money-wise but more livable through goods and services for citizens here in America. Basically the "west Indies" people lived off natural resources and made shelter from their surroundings. When Christopher Columbus arrived he made businesses for people who wanted to work, and he made trade markets for people who wanted to buy goods from the old world such as jewelry, jewels, spices, perfume, etc; only the wealthy bought such items.
Holidays around the world are celebrated to remember and commemorate certain times in history, and to keep those dates important. For quite some time, Columbus Day has been a questionable holiday. Some people say it should be a holiday because we are acknowledging the fact that he discovered the Americas. In contrast, others disagree because of the ways he treated the original inhabitants of the places he discovered. This paper will argue that Columbus Day should not be a holiday because he exploited, murdered, and enslaved many natives throughout his journeys.
Throughout a student’s academic career they will find that they will be expected to write an essay and be able to effectively back up their claims; a feat many students struggle with. Putting aside all the horrible things Columbus did, he did help colonize North America. He opened up a new world where people could go to freely express themselves, it was the land of the free. People could freely practice their religion and many could start a new life. Another reason why people don't want Columbus day to change is because of his Italian background. Many italian americans are proud of Christopher Columbus because of his italian background.
Some say Christopher Columbus was a hero because he was the explorer that discovered America. In reality, Christopher Columbus had an incredibly negative impact on the world because he enslaved the Native Americans, didn’t help the kind Natives when they got infected by diseases that the Spaniards had brought to America, and killed off most of the Native American population. The tactics he chose to use were violent and destructive by the standards back then and now. First, Columbus treated the Native Americans like uncivilized people by enslaving them and forcing them to work for him although they greeted him and his crew peacefully. ” They could make fine servants,”(document 2) he wrote in his journal,”I took them by force.
My artworks for the project ‘Ordinary Extraordinary’ are all related to the Native American Spirit Animals, what my spirit animal is and how it relates to me. All six of my final drawings, except for one was in the medium pencil and two of my drawings, involved colour. The two artists I found and decided to do my research essay on, were Kirby Sattler, who paints portraits of Native American people in their traditional regalia and Julie Rhodes, who is an amazing wildlife artist, focusing specifically in the medium pencil. My first artist, Kirby Sattler, focuses mainly on portraits and profiles of Native American people in their traditional clothing, including feathers that represent something in their culture.
