Columbus does not deserve the credit of being called a hero because he did not start a new civilization. In fact, “American Indian people have been on this continent at least 10,000 years, and scientists have proven that numerous other explorers had arrived on this continent from other parts of the world long before Columbus.” (Document 3). Instead of forming a new civilization with the American Indians instead he invaded their land, changed their culture and how they lived he indeed did not start a new civilization.
Many people when they were younger, including myself, were taught that Columbus is a hero and an amazing person who discover the New World. We were all told that Columbus’s purpose for sailing thousands of miles across the Atlantic was to come here in search of undiscovered land. Columbus DID want land but he was expecting to get that land from
I agree that his accidental discovery ultimately led to the massacre of countless Natives. Although, he might be considered a hero for 'discovering ' the New World. However, there were several who came before him and inhabited the land, such as the Natives. Thus, the impossibility of discovering something that had already been in place. For this reason, I would not consider Columbus a hero.

To many, Christopher Columbus was a very remarkable man of history. His many discoveries and conquests, despite all the hardships faced, have led others to believe that he is some sort of hero. But is that really what he is? A hero? In A people’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn, he states, “To emphasize the heroism of Columbus and his successors as navigators and discoverers, and to deemphasize their genocide, is not a technical necessity, but an ideological choice”.
While some choose to celebrate, seeing Columbus as a hero, others believe Columbus was far from a good, gracious man. Zinn talks of how stingy Columbus and the Spaniards were when it came to gold. They took advantage of the Indians. Zinn includes writings from Columbus, in which he speaks about how vulnerable and non-resistant the Indians were, claiming they would never say no when Columbus asked them to hand over their resources. It has always been taught to me in history that Columbus and his men did take advantage of the Indians, but Zinn seems to take it into much more detail in comparison to the Patriots History textbook, which seems to lack the amount of gruesome detail from A People’s History.
“In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. He had three ships and left from Spain; He sailed through sunshine, wind, and rain. He sailed by night; he sailed by day; He used the stars to find his way” In 1492 by Jean Marzollo. It is a poem that many of us know. Or at least we know the first line.
Is Christopher Columbus Worth Honoring The world has glorified many historical people especially early explorers. One such explorer is Christopher Columbus. Historians have discovered that perhaps Columbus Was given honor prematurely.
Christopher Columbus is well known as the person who discovered the Americas. We even have a holiday called “Columbus Day” to honor him. However he does not deserve this credit due to the way he treated the Native Americans, the legacy he left behind and the fact that he didn’t discover anything. Christopher punished those who questioned him, forced rape upon the Natives and forced the Native Americans to move west. He left behind a legacy of slavery, greed and genocide.
“Following the light of the sun, we left the Old World” said by one of the most famous explorers in history. In school we were always taught that Christopher Columbus was the famous Italian explorer who founded the “New World” of the Americas, but the real question is is Christopher Columbus a hero or a villain? This also brings us to the question was the treatment of the Native Americans an act of Genocide? Everyone has there own opinions on how Christopher Columbus treated the Native Americans, but I believe that the treatment towards the Native Americans was an act of Genocide.
Christopher Columbus is a man who is commonly depicted as a hero and great explorer who discovered our modern day America, but many of the so called “facts” are not all completely true as people would like to believe. Columbus was undoubtedly a courageous explorer who brought many new ideas, cultures, and resources to be exchanged between the New World and Europe. While this is true, it is not uncommon for people to forget the harmful effects brought along with the voyages made by Columbus and the darker details of his times in America. Columbus started from humble middle class family. Columbus was born in 1451 in the Republic of Genoa as the oldest of his four siblings.

Therefore, although Columbus is credited for the founding of America, Zinn proves his heroic actions can be hindered by his violence towards the Awracks; however, when Columbus is mentioned in history, he is often given a positive and heroic characteristic. However, Columbus and the Europeans committed a lot of genocide when conquering the Native American land.
And that is why I am grateful to have learned many details that shine the light on the way that Christopher Columbus actually was like, a villain. I have my reasons for considering Columbus a villain. For example Because of him there is much less diversity in animals. And if that wasn’t bad enough he is also the reason why there are very few native americans left.
