Miriam Ruhland NBE 3U Ms. Darby Conning 9 May 2023 Literary Essay Moral Injury from Trauma in Indian Horse The Novel Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese is a horrific narrative about Saul Indian Horse, an Indigenous boy. The book focuses on his childhood trauma, grossly induced by the residential school he attended, and how he was able to cope. By telling Saul’s story, Wagamese displays the effect of trauma on one’s motivation to live a moral life.
Columbus does not deserve the credit of being called a hero because he did not start a new civilization. In fact, “American Indian people have been on this continent at least 10,000 years, and scientists have proven that numerous other explorers had arrived on this continent from other parts of the world long before Columbus.” (Document 3). Instead of forming a new civilization with the American Indians instead he invaded their land, changed their culture and how they lived he indeed did not start a new civilization.
Christopher Columbus was an explorer who was known to discover the new world. There was another side to Christopher Columbus that they don’t talk about. Columbus first set foot in Hispaniola where he encountered a group of native that was called the Taino. The Taino was a friendly group of people who traded jewelry, animals, and supplies with sailors. In the article Christopher Columbus: Hero or Villain?
Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer, navigator, and colonizer who is well known for “discovering” North America. In reality Christopher was trying to get to China and thought he was in Japan all 4 times he went to North America. He was actually in what is now the Bahamas and Cuba. And really Christopher didn't even discover America. The Native Americans beat Columbus by thousands of years.
I believe that Columbus is a hero since he kinda figured about America. I believe that he figured our America since if he never sailed there no one wouldn't had known that America existed. Even when Columbus did figure about America he did hold some people as hostage to explore the area i think he just did that since he probably didn’t feel safe around that
Christopher Columbus was the man credited with the discovery of the New World, even though the Native Americans and possibly the Vikings discovered it before him. He is celebrated as an American hero among many, but among some, he is a monster. Columbus was the man that tried to discover the westward route to the East Indies for the Spanish (14-1), and ultimately, he opened the Americas for colonial expansion to Europe. He is said to have enslaved many Native Americans, committing horrible atrocities to them. The question on the table is whether Columbus was a hero or villain.
I agree that his accidental discovery ultimately led to the massacre of countless Natives. Although, he might be considered a hero for 'discovering ' the New World. However, there were several who came before him and inhabited the land, such as the Natives. Thus, the impossibility of discovering something that had already been in place. For this reason, I would not consider Columbus a hero.
Christopher Columbus Hero or Villain ? Christopher Columbus is a Villain. On some accounts he can be a Hero. But on many other accounts he's a vicious Villain. Yes he discovered America ;
Author Ian W. Toll puts it in a quite interesting way in his book review of Laurence Bergreen’s The Four Voyages: “Christopher Columbus, rediscoverer of America, was a visionary explorer. He was a harbinger of genocide. He was a Christianizing messiah. He was a pitiless slave master. He was a lionhearted seaman, a rapacious plunderer, a masterly navigator, a Janus-faced schemer, a liberator of oppressed tribes, a delusional megalomaniac.
Christopher Columbus has been viewed as both a positive historical hero and someone who was selfish and brought harm and misfortune to the Indians to benefit the white men. When flipping through a history textbook or sitting through a high school history course Columbus is viewed as a hero who embarked on many expeditions that helped others as well as brought people together with an abundance of goods. God, glory, gold, government, and geography motivated Columbus on his voyages. Columbus discovered land that he believed to be the Indies, which is what led him to identifying the natives as Indians. The people Columbus met were welcoming to Columbus and his men although they didn’t have the spices that were originally expected and needed.
Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus hero or villain? I personal think he's both a hero and a villain in the sense that he was brave enough to sail across an uncharted ocean, but at the same time he enslaved and mutilated innocent natives. He’s a hero for taking on the challenge to set out and find a new world that as unknown to the Europeans. While he may not have set foot on the shores of North America, he still found a new piece of land that was unknown to the Europeans.
Christopher Columbus is well known as the person who discovered the Americas. We even have a holiday called “Columbus Day” to honor him. However he does not deserve this credit due to the way he treated the Native Americans, the legacy he left behind and the fact that he didn’t discover anything. Christopher punished those who questioned him, forced rape upon the Natives and forced the Native Americans to move west. He left behind a legacy of slavery, greed and genocide.
It cannot deny that Christopher Columbus was one of famous and important explorers in history because of some achievements and contributions of him in navigation. However, Christopher is still far from considering of hero because of some reasons. First, basing on description of "hero", hero is a person who sacrifices his or her personal needs to others, so Columbus should not be considered as hero. Because of his agreement with King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, his purpose for the voyage to America might not be kind of self-abnegation. Second, the main purpose of his voyage is not to discover America, but he wanted to find a route to India.
Almost everybody has heard of Christopher Columbus, but do you know that he tried to sail for 15 years. Christopher Columbus found new land, was a good navigator, and never gave up. Here are some reasons why Columbus should be considered a hero. The first reason that Christopher Columbus was a hero is because he found new land.
Some say Christopher Columbus was a hero because he was the explorer that discovered America. In reality, Christopher Columbus had an incredibly negative impact on the world because he enslaved the Native Americans, didn’t help the kind Natives when they got infected by diseases that the Spaniards had brought to America, and killed off most of the Native American population. The tactics he chose to use were violent and destructive by the standards back then and now. First, Columbus treated the Native Americans like uncivilized people by enslaving them and forcing them to work for him although they greeted him and his crew peacefully. ” They could make fine servants,”(document 2) he wrote in his journal,”I took them by force.
