Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer, navigator, and colonizer who is well known for “discovering” North America. In reality Christopher was trying to get to China and thought he was in Japan all 4 times he went to North America. He was actually in what is now the Bahamas and Cuba. And really Christopher didn't even discover America. The Native Americans beat Columbus by thousands of years.
I agree that his accidental discovery ultimately led to the massacre of countless Natives. Although, he might be considered a hero for 'discovering ' the New World. However, there were several who came before him and inhabited the land, such as the Natives. Thus, the impossibility of discovering something that had already been in place. For this reason, I would not consider Columbus a hero.

During the time period of which Columbus first set foot on the new world, peoples views on slavery were much different than ours today. They made exceptions to it as everyone owned slaves back them (Document 2). However, physical abuse and torture are no exception. Columbus has been exposed for his torture on the Taino tribe. Every three months Columbus demanded a hawk's bell of gold or 25 pounds of spun cotton from everyone over the age of fourteen.

Christopher Columbus was an famous italian explorer who so called discovered the new world of the Americas. He was born in 1451 in the republic of Genoa, which is now known as Italy. Throughout his time as an explorer many have debated if he was a villain or a hero because of his actions while exploring. I believe he is a villain because he enslaved and mutilated native people and he would hurt those slaves if they did not return to him with enough gold. He also was arrested by the spanish government and eventually sent back to spain because the spanish monarchs seen the mistreatment amongst the spanish colonist.
A heavily debated topic in this day and age is if Christopher Columbus was really a hero or a mass murderer. On one hand, he opened up access to the New World and created trade routes, on the other, he primarily unintentionally almost wiped out a population and abused Native Americans. I believe that Columbus was more of a hero than he was a villain because he had a normal mindset and goal for Spaniards during the time period, many things he is blamed for happened completely unintentionally or by accident, and Columbus wasn’t the only one who had servants and took Natives captive. Often when looking back into history, we unintentionally judge events, people, and actions based off of our current mindset, and Christopher Columbus was no exception.
Columbus believed these people were easy to manipulate and take control over therefore, that's what he did. Although, he was told to treat these people with kindness he did the complete opposite expecting there to be no cause. He treated them horribly with brutality and severe violence. He even noted in one of his journals that the natives looked like they'd be good servants. Columbus also put natives to work for profits.
Columbus was the first messenger sent to the Americas from a Western civilization and he wrote, “As soon as I arrived in the Indies, on the first Island which I found, I took some of the natives by force in order that they might learn and might give me information of whatever there is in these parts,” (Zinn) which explains how Columbus wanted to take over America and he was willing to constrain the Natives just to do
It was during the 1400's when the face of exploration would change forever by one man. This infamous individual is Christopher Columbus. Known as the best darn sailor to ever live, his determination and hard working soul has shaped the world we have today. However, while many are taught that Columbus was a hero or an aristocrat, that is not actually accurate. To be historically correct, Christopher Columbus brought death and horror to the Americas.
After sending them on a search for gold, the ones who found nothing had their hands cut off, and they ultimately bled to death. If some tried to defy his laws, they were hanged or burned at the stake. Columbus and his men literally had total control over the natives, which led to complete domination. With their lack of weapons, they were unable to fight back. Some of his soldiers were so despicable, they rode on the backs of the natives, like they were horses.

When I was younger I was told the Christopher Columbus was a hero. And when I was a child I didn’t know better so I believed it. Because adults would never lie to me, right?
