In 1492, Christopher Columbus arrived on the island of San Salvador. Columbus commanded three ships- the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria- while sailing across the Atlantic Ocean. Technology proved useful in that era, but what if Columbus had the technology of present day sailors? Technological advances could dramatically change the course and the means of transportation. Columbus’s voyage depends on the amount of technology that was available. Technology had a large impact on Columbus’s voyage. Columbus used several types of technology to navigate and sail across the Atlantic Ocean; however, if he had better technology his voyage would be different. For example, Christopher Columbus did not like to use technology because of how often it would be inaccurate or ineffective. Columbus was known as a dead reckoning navigator. A dead reckoning navigator uses charts and measuring speed- in miles per hours- to determine the location of the ship, and how far it traveled. Columbus set out discover a quicker path to india; however, instead he found something different. The information that Columbus had back in 1492 was not accurate, and was missing key information. Columbus was correct in saying that the earth was round, but what he did not know was that there was more to the earth than just Europe, Asia, and Africa. There was no detailed map of anything west of the Atlantic Ocean, so Columbus presumed that it lead to the other side of india. If Columbus had a map of the earth, or GPS, he would have known where everything was and may have went a different path. Columbus’s goal was to reach India, and with the GPS he could have found a faster, more accurate, path to India.
